2023 CMT Music Awards: Carrie Underwood Performs ‘Hate My Heart’ [WATCH]

Carrie Underwood might have walked away empty-handed at the 2023  CMT Music Awards, but she walked away a winner when it came to her performance. The Oklahoma native sang her current single, “Hate My Heart,” outside of the Texas capitol building, surrounded by fans, with a massive fireworks display to cap off her performance.

Although Underwood didn’t win any CMT Music Awards during the ceremony, she maintains her title as the most-awarded artist in the show’s history, with 25 wins.

“To have that many is really cool, taking up space in my trophy area, which is awesome,” Underwood told CMT ahead of the ceremony. “They always show up and I am beyond grateful and thankful for them, in so many ways.”‘

Underwood was nominated for Female Video of the Year, for “Ghost Story” and  Video of the Year, a category she won consecutively for the last four years, for “Hate My Heart.” Lainey Wilson  took home the CMT Music Award for Female Video of the Year, with “Heart Like A Truck,” and Kane Brown  and his wife, Katelyn Brown, won Video of the Year, for “Thank God.”

“It’s always such an amazing thing, to be nominated for Video of the Year, especially because I feel like we do put a lot into our videos,” Underwood said. “We really want people to like them. To have four in a row is spectacular. Five would of course be even more spectacular, but I know that they’ve been working hard. So whatever happens, happens, and I’m happy for whoever takes it home.”

Underwood wrote “Hate My Heart” with David Garcia, Hillary Lindsey and HARDY. The song is from her latest  Denim & Rhinestones, out last June.

“‘Hate My Heart’ was definitely part of my desire to have fun on this album,” Underwood said of the uptempo track. “I wanted songs that would be exciting to perform live and would fill up an arena, and that’s exactly what we’re about to do with The Denim & Rhinestones Tour. This one is definitely going to get everyone up on their feet and having a good time. It was great writing ‘Hate My Heart’ with Hillary Lindsey and David Garcia, who I love collaborating with, and also getting to work with Hardy, who brought a cool vibe and an energy to the track.”
