Jelly Roll is the Male Artist of the Year winner at the People’s Choice Country Awards! The singer received the news from Elle King, while performing in Cincinnati.
“Right now live in Nashville, Tennessee, they are doing the People’s Choice Country Awards, right now as we speak,” Jelly Roll said during his concert, as part of his headlining Backroad Baptism Tour. “And I thought when I was here, I didn’t have a chance of winning, but the losers won again, baby. This award has nothing to do with me, and it has everything to do with y’all. This was fan-voted. This is for the fans. It’s always for the fans. The underdogs are back on top, baby.
“And I want to say thank you to the People’s Choice Country Awards, for giving an opportunity for me and these 20,000 degenerates to celebrate this together live on national television, from Cincinnati, Ohio,” he added.
Jelly Roll also won the People’s Choice Country Award for Collaboration Song, for his “Save Me” duet with Lainey Wilson.
“Man, I wish he was here. I really wish he was here,” Wilson said when accepting the award on his behalf. “I have gotten to know Jelly over the last few years. Actually, back in 2013 I believe, he was doing a music video with Uncle Kracker, and they were paying folks about a hundred dollars to go be extras in the music video, and I was a drunk girl passed out on the ground. I never got my hundred dollars, but I just wanna say, Jelly is one of the purest souls I have gotten to know.
“And I think it is so cool that he has fans who love him for him,” she added. “And he makes people feel like they can be true to themselves and their stories, and that right there is special, so this is for Jelly Roll.”
The People’s Choice Country Awards likely aren’t the only trophies Jelly Roll will take home this year. The Nashville native is also nominated for five CMA Awards,
“It is known as Country Music’s biggest night,” Jelly Roll said when the nominations were announced. “It literally doesn’t get any bigger than this and I have five nominations. I couldn’t control myself when I got the news… everything about this is unreal. The truth is, being nominated is already a win for me. Just being recognized by my peers and by the industry for the work we put in is amazing, especially for my people, this is a win for all the underdogs and forgotten.
“These are the moments I hope my people are the most proud of, that I have taken our message to the masses without compromise and have been embraced,” he continued. “Thank you to the CMA Country Music Association. This is magical and you can bet the farm that my wife and I will show up dressed to impress yet trashy as ever – see y’all November 8th.”
