The Grand Ole Opry is celebrating its 95th anniversary in October, with artists like Vince Gill, Carly Pearce, Little Big Town and more performing during the month-long celebration. Several country music artists, whether members or still patiently waiting to be invited to join, shard their favorite memories of the Opry with People. Read some of their answers below.
Trisha Yearwood
“I went to the Opry while on vacation with my parents when I was 15,” Trisha recounted of her first time at the hallowed venue. “Of course, I convinced my parents that instead of a beach trip, we should go to Nashville! My plan was to never go home, but they made me finish school.”
Carrie Underwood
“It was a such whirlwind because it was right after I was on American Idol,” Carrie recalled of her Opry debut. “I was backstage, and there were so many people I was meeting and taking pictures with. I just felt like everyone was excited I was there, which was great, because I was excited that I was there!”
Reba McEntire
“Dolly came out to celebrate the 40th anniversary of my Opry debut,” Reba remembered. “I was already thrilled to pieces because Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill were there to sing with me, but when Dolly came out that was just the icing on the cake!”
Scotty McCreery
“I will never forget Carrie Underwood introducing me to the Opry crowd that night,” Scotty said of his first Opry performance. “She was so sweet and made me feel like I was so welcomed.”
Darius Rucker
“When I was inducted, Little Jimmy Dickens pulled me to the side, grabbed me and said, ‘Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you don’t belong here!'” Darius said. “I will always cherish that Opry moment.”
Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox
“Standing in that Circle for the first time,” Gary remembered of the first time Rascal Flatts performed. “I think my knees were shaking a little bit. Every time we play the Opry I feel like it’s the very first time.”
Carly Pearce
“The second time I ever played at the Opry, I heard a knock at my dressing room door,” Carly shared. “In walked Garth and Trisha! They were surprise guests that night and just wanted to hang with me for a bit. It was insane.”
Chris Young
“Vince Gill asking me to become an Opry member,” Chris said of his favorite Opry memory. “I was so surprised and completely blown away that I picked him up over my head.”
Lindsay Ell
“Stepping into that wooden Circle,” Lindsey said of her favorite part of playing the Grand Ole Opry. “So many legends have walked on that stage before me, and it’s a true honor to be a part of the threadwork that makes the history of such an incredible venue.”
