Alex Stern is premiering the acoustic video of her song, “Somebody,” exclusively with Everything Nash. The song was inspired by Alex’s love of her home state of New Mexico, along with her desire to have a full-time career in Nashville, and her struggle to balance the two.
“I wrote it with one of my best friends, Brian Donkers,” Alex recalled to Everything Nash. “I just walked in to his small home studio that day, and I said, ‘Brian, I’m just feeling like I am getting really, really burned, and I don’t know if this is all worth it. Why am I doing this?’ That whole week started the songwriting process. Fo me, it starts sometimes with just a concept or an idea. And I basically just told him that I have this idea that everybody can relate to in this song, really anybody who is trying to be somebody.
“What does that even mean?,” she reflected. “What does it mean to be somebody? Is it the determinant of what success means? Is it how many people know your name, or is it how many people you show up for in your life? How many phone calls from home do you miss because you’re out trying to achieve validation? Is it worth it? What does it mean? To say that you have all these things, but then at the end of the day, not be able to share it with the people you really love.”
Alex wrote “Somebody” four years ago, when she was still unsure if she wanted to stay in Music City or return to the people, and the state, she loves. Now still happily living in Nashville, writing “Somebody” became a pivotal point in her life and career.
“I think writing that song was honestly a creative turning point for me as a person,” Alex admitted. “It was for me realizing that if I’m going to keep walking this road, that I want to remember why I started, and why I started wasn’t to ever portray myself as something that I’m not. It wasn’t to live behind a facade. It was just me centering back into knowing I started this because I love songwriting, It really was about me feeling like I can say something that feels really scary to say in person, but if I write it in a song, I feel fearless.”
“Somebody” will be on an upcoming EP, Witness, an autobiographical look at her own life, and her journey so far. Ironically, the rising star filmed the acoustic video for “Somebody” in her own living room, right before COVID-19 forced everyone into their homes.
“Crazy enough, the pandemic quarantine literally started a week later,” Alex recounted. “I had absolutely no idea how the next month would unfold. I think that was along with the whole mentality of the project, which will be coming later after these few singles, just really feeling a sense of transparency. I wrote ‘Somebody’ with one of my absolute best friends, and I wanted to make this video in a setting that was intimate. I filmed it in my living room with one of my best friends, Eric, who is part of my band. I wanted it to feel as open and real as when we wrote it.”
Alex doesn’t have a release date for Witness yet, which she says will likely happen in early 2021, but she does promise she will be painfully honest in all the songs on her new record.
“It’s an autobiographical portrayal of what I’ve learned it means to truly witness my life, and witness the people in my life in different chapters,” Alex shared. “It’s what I’ve learned along the way. It’s about being completely seen and raw, and it’s felt pretty revealing and terrifying. Every single and song that’s released, it truly is like an unfiltered part of my heart. I think it’s an honor to witness life and to be healthy and all the things I’m grateful for, but that’s what the battle is: learning how to witness myself, having vulnerability, having grace for myself, making mistakes, forgiving them.
“If there’s anything that I believe with my music, I want people to feel like they have the permission to be seen,” she added. “And that’s what the project helps me to feel when I need it.”
