Alexandra Kay Covers Jo De Messina, Sets Her Sights On the Grand Ole Opry

Alexandra Kay is continuing her ascent as one of country music’s most promising singers. The Illinois native recently posted two Jo Dee Messina covers, both Messina’s 1998 hit, “I’m Alright,” as well as her debut “Heads Carolina, Tails California” single.

Kay, who earned an opening spot on Tim McGraw‘s McGraw Tour 2022 because of her flawless covers of country classics, shared both of them on TikTok.

The rising star also posted a photo on social media, standing outside the Grand Ole Opry.

“Thank you for letting me sing backstage for you yesterday, Grand Ole Opry, ” Kay wrote on social media. “I can’t wait for the day I get to step into that circle!”

It seems likely that Kay will have that opportunity sooner rather than later. Kay, who inexplicably was turned down for both The Voice and American Idol, knew from an early age that making a career in music was the only path she wanted to take.

“My mom forced me to go for the American Idol auditions in 2011,” Kay told Sounds Like Nashville.  “I didn’t want to go and remember trying to make every excuse to get out of it. I ended up going, making it through three rounds [and then getting cut]. There’s nothing that lights a fire in me like being told that I can’t do something or being told ‘no.’ As soon as I got eliminated from that show, I was on this full throttle. That’s when I made the decision to not go to college and take myself off scholarships I had worked so hard for, and take a couple of years off to pursue music. It was very scary wondering if I made the right decision for the first few years but now, I definitely think I did.”

Kay released “That’s What Love Is” earlier this year, written for her marriage to her husband, Indiana, followed by “I Kinda Don’t.” She will drop her new track, “Skip This Part,” on September 8. Find music and all of Kay’s upcoming shows at AlexandraKayOfficial.
