New music is here from Alexandra Kay! The singer-songwriter just dropped her new single, “Easy,” along with the song’s theatrical video.
“If you’ve ever had to leave a relationship that you know wasn’t good for you, that you know was toxic, and the other person told you you were taking the easy way out by leaving, then I wrote you a song,” Kay said ahead of the release of “Easy.”
Kay used her own band in the video, which takes place in a bowling alley and a record store. The song is from an upcoming album, scheduled to be released this fall, which Kay says will be very, very personal about her own life, including heartache she recently went through, but is coming out stronger on the other side.
“I don’t plan on talking about it in interviews, or doing anything like that, or making some huge video where I explain everything,” the “I Hate Airplanes” singer told St. Louis radio station 92.3 WIL. “I just wrote through it, and still treated it as a project, and looked at it in full, and recognized, ‘If somebody else was going through what I’m going through, how can I help? What would they need to be hearing right now? What do I need to be hearing right now?’ And those are the songs that we wrote. I wrote it with some of my best friends in Nashville. I’m really excited.”
Kay began the year with time off the road, a rarity for her, to work on her debut project.
“It’s a product of the last year, but I definitely still have a few more songs before it’s done, and I just wanna make sure it’s perfect,” Kay told Music Mayhem. “It’s my first full-length project, and I wanna make sure that I give my fans something that they listen to and they know it’s me as soon as it starts spinning. And so I just want them to be as proud of it as I will be.”
Kay’s now-skyrocketing career began when she performed covers of songs on TikTok, garnering millions of fans, including Tim McGraw, who invited her to join him on his McGraw Tour 2022 last year.
“One day, I slid in and was singing a Jo Dee Messina song, and I had a big coffee, like in a mason jar, and somebody commented and said, ‘How do you make your coffee?’ Kay recalled on Pensacola, Florida’s Cat Country 98.7. “I replied, and I made it in front of them, and I sang a song by The Chicks, and it blew up. I said, ‘Okay, maybe we’ll try this again.’
“I did it the next day, and it was crazy,” she continued. “It was like every single video I did with it, for days, multiple times a day, it was like three million, four million, five million, six million, ten million, 12 million, 15 million [views]. It was crazy. It was nuts. It was a whirlwind, for sure. I think I gained like a million followers in a week.”
The Illinois native is headlining her own Australian tour, which begins on Sunday, October 1 in Sydney. The tour comes after she spent much of the last several months on the road, including with her headlining Backroad Therapy Tour in 2022, which was extended into 2023 due to fan demand. She also recently wrapped up her Dive Bar Dreamer Tour, which concluded in August.
