Alexandra Kay just pulled off the biggest surprise for her fans at a recent Tennessee show. Kay was performing Chattanooga, when she was joined by Jo Dee Messina, where they shared the stage to sing one of Messina’s most-successful singles.
“I’m playing a prank on Chattanooga tonight. I’m kidding, it’s not a prank,” Kay shares. “It’s actually a really great surprise. I have called my friend Jo Dee Messina, and asked her if she was free this evening to come surprise the crowd in Chattanooga for being so amazing. There are over 1000 people out there, and they’re so loud, and they deserve this, to hear the Queen of Country come out and play one of her biggest hits.”
The two then combined their talents on “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” with the crowd singing along to every word.

This isn’t the first time Kay and Messina have collaborated. Last year, Messina shared a clip of them singing backstage at a country music festival. After their recent collaboration, Kay praised Messina for her inspiration and friendship.
“From singing along to her songs on country radio in the backseat of my parents’ Ford Expedition – wishing one day to be just like her, to actually having her as a friend and a mentor is the wildest full circle moment of my life,” Kay says. “Jo Dee Messina, thank you so much for coming out last night to surprise the crowd in Chattanooga. I have never heard anything as loud as when you took the stage last night..Thank you for continuing to inspire me, believing in me, and mentoring me. You are an icon and truly one of a kind. Love you dearly”
Messina joined Kay while Kay is on her headlining Cupid’s A Cowgirl Tour. Kay was recently announced as on of the opening acts on Brad Paisley‘s Truck Still Works World Tour, along with Walker Hayes, Avery Anna and Mae Estes. The tour comes as part of an exciting year for Kay, who also just signed a record deal, with BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville.
“My journey – our journey together is so special to me,” Kay shares on social media, in a message to her fans. “I’ve been playing for y’all well over a decade now… starting at dusty county fairs, dive bars with the stickiest floors, playing four-hour cover gigs four nights a week while bartending and hosting full-time hours. Nights, weeks, months and years passed with barely any sleep. I wouldn’t change a thing.. as a full-time artist this journey has taken US through dive bars and small clubs all around the country, to major festivals, amphitheaters and arena tours with my music idols and inspirations. For 13-plus years YOU have supported me through all the ups and downs.”
Kay has indeed had plenty of highs and lows in her career, as well as her personal life. Through it all, the Illinois native has worked really hard to connect with her fans, and make meaningful music. Fortunately, her efforts have paid off, and well, for her.
“For the past six years, I’ve poured my heart into being an independent artist—believing in myself, investing in my music, and building a team that gave everything to help me grow … I am forever grateful,” Kay says, thanking by name several who have been her biggest supporters through it all.
“AND THE FANS who have made every dream I have ever had come true,” she concludes. “As I looked toward the next chapter, I knew I wanted to make an impact at country radio., that has always been so important to me. That brought me back to a conversation in 2021 with Jon Loba at BBR. No matter how many meetings I had, I could never shake the feeling that BBR was where I belonged. This partnership has been four years in the making, and today, I’m beyond excited to finally make it official. Here’s to the next chapter.”
