Alexandra Kay laid her heart bare with her new album, All I’ve Ever Known, out now. The record, which debuted at No. 1 when it was released, includes the deeply personal track, “Everleave.” The song is a poignant inside glimpse at the end of her marriage to her husband, Indiana.
With lines like “Standing at the kitchen sink / I wonder if you’ll ask about my day / I’m washing off your dinner plate / And all I see is a decade down the drain / And you’ve got no idea I’m drowning / Mind is racing, heart is pounding / Is today the day I walk away?” Kay says the song is one of her favorite songs she has ever written, even if it is painful to sing.
Kay, currently on her headlining All I’ve Ever Known Tour, shared a recent performance of her singing the heartbreaking tune.
The Illinois native didn’t shy away from sharing her deepest thoughts about the end of her marriage in her music, choosing to be very real and vulnerable with all 11 songs on the project.
“Having All I’ve Ever Known finally out in the world feels like a sigh of relief,” Kay said when the record was released. “The process of creating this album top to bottom has been so therapeutic for me, and I hope that these songs can be a source of solace for those who need them, too.”
Kay began writing when she was 13 years old, using it as an outlet to convey her feelings and emotions. It’s how she has processed her feelings in the years since, so writing about the end of her marriage, as personal and painful as it was, felt very natural to her.
“I’m going through a divorce from my ex who I was with for a decade,” Kay shared with Music Mayhem. “I pretty much just became 13 again. The only way that I knew how to process this extreme loss in my life and the grief that I was feeling was to write about it, and that’s exactly what I did. And so, I’ve always been vulnerable in my music, but this is by far the most I think raw and real and unapologetic I’ve been when it comes to writing.”
Kay’s All I’ve Ever Known album returned to the Top 5 on the charts one month after it was released. Kay shared the exciting news on social media.
