Amy Grant is back with new music, for the first time in a decade. The wife of Vince Gill announces the release of “Trees We’ll Never See,” out on March 24.
“It’s fun to be reminded, after a season of simplicity, of what really makes me happy,” Grant shared while speaking on the Today Show. “And music, and making music, really makes me happy.”
An acclaimed songwriter, who has written many of her own hits, including “Say Once More,” “That’s What Love Is For,” “Baby Baby” and more, Grant is not a writer on “Trees We’ll Never See.” Instead, that song was written by Marshall Altman, who produced her last studio album, How Mercy Looks From Here, out in 2013, and Michael White. The song comes ahead of “What You Heard,” which will be out in April.
It was Grant’s near-fatal bike accident last summer that put a lot into perspective for her, including her love of making music.
“So much creativity has been put on hold in my life, for all kinds of reasons,” the 62-year-old explains. “Last summer I was asked to sing on a new Cory Asbury song yet to be released. This might be one of the best songs I have heard in a long time. I was so glad they waited for me to heal up and get back to the studio. Inspired by Cory’s beautiful song, Marshall Altman and I started talking about songs that we’ve written recently that affected us.
“I played him one of mine,” she recalls. “He played me one of his. His song was ‘Trees We’ll Never See.’ I loved it immediately and asked him if I could record it, and within two weeks, both songs were mixed and mastered!”
Grant had a grueling recovery following her accident, and still deals with some memory loss issues. Still, the gospel singer says she is doing better than ever, and is surprisingly grateful for the unexpected trial.
“I feel fantastic,” Grant says. “I mean, really from 2020 on, I feel like I had to, if I were a car, I’ve made a lotta trips to the shop. And I feel like I’m emerging. I went, ‘Oh man, I feel like a classic now.’ And actually sort of re-revved up in a really beautiful way.”
