Ashley McBryde just announced the release of The Devil I Know, her fourth studio album, out on September 8. The 11-track record, co-written entirely by McBryde, includes her current Top 40 single, “Light On In The Kitchen,” plus a new track, “Learned to Lie,” out now.
“When it was time to put together The Devil I Know, my band and I did what we always do: got together in the purple building in East Nashville, played through a bunch of songs and discussed where we wanted it to go,” McBryde says. “We decided to take all the things that people tend to give us a hard time for and turn it up.”
The Arkansas native drew inspiration for all of the songs on The Devil I Know by taking all of the criticisms she has received over the years, turning it into an authentic project that McBryde is proud to release.
“‘Y’all are too country.’ We leaned into that – more country it is,” says the singer. “‘Y’all are awfully rock-leaning for a country artist.’ Is that so? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. ‘Last thing y’all need is another tender, finger-pickin’ song.’ Oh? Tender makes you uneasy, cowboy? I hear you. Let’s see how much more tender we can be. We listened to all those opinions and said, ‘I hear you. I understand what you’re saying.’ But sadly, there’s no room on the record for your opinion. We’ll do what we want.”
McBryde previously released the title track of The Devil I Know, a song she wrote with Jeremy Stover and Bobby Pinson.
“We’re always hearing something from somebody who thinks they know what’s best for us,” McBryde says of the song, which says in part “Everybody’s got something to say / About how I gotta change my ways / Well, I got something to say of my own / Hell, there’s hell everywhere I go / So I’m sticking with the devil I know.” “Lose weight, your hair’s too curly, change this, change that. Things just seem to go better when you trust your own lens to see what’s good for you.”
McBryde has a busy touring schedule over the next several months. The Grand Ole Opry member will headline her own shows, while also opening for both Eric Church and Jelly Roll.
