It’s a new chapter for Austin Brown and his wife, Amberly, and an exciting one at that. The talented singer left Home Free earlier this year, where he had been for 12 years, to launch his solo career, and just released “Hers Ain’t Mine,” from Brown’s forthcoming new solo album.
“I left my band. I had an amazing decade with those guys, and then one day I realized that it was time for me to come home, because that tour life is no joke,” Brown explains to Everything Nash. “It was fun for a really long time, and then I came home and realized that the good Lord wanted me to come home and build a life with her, build a business, build a career. We’re thinking about building a family. Right now we’re just raising a bunch of animals. But I’m grateful for the path that has been laid before me. I get to make all of my music with and for this woman. We make a bunch of content together. We just had a music video for ‘Hers Ain’t Mine’ come out. ‘Hers Ain’t Mine’ is the song that really put us on the map.”
“Hers Ain’t Mine” landed in the Top 20 when it was released, a clear sign for Brown that he made the right decision to step away from Home Free, after a dozen years with the all-vocal group.
“I feel like it’s God telling me that I’m on the right path, ’cause it was a joke,” Brown says of the success of “Hers Ain’t Mine.” “I wrote that song just to be funny, ’cause I came home from tour, and she was driving my truck, and she wouldn’t give it back. So, make authentic music, and folks will resonate with it. I guess that’s the truth.”
Brown reveals that “Hers Ain’t Mine” is part of his new Happy Wife, Happy Life album, scheduled to be released in 2025.
“It’s called Happy Wife, Happy Life … We just finished production on that song,” Brown says of the title track. “The whole album is to be done in the next three or four weeks. We’re going to release it in the early spring. A full project, my debut solo album. It snuck up on me, but here it is.”
After spending a dozen years with four other people on stage as part of Home Free, Brown finds the change invigorating and exciting, in a way he couldn’t have anticipated.
“It’s just as much fun, if not more, in a whole brand-new way,” explains the singer. “I’m with a band. I’ve got a four, five, six-piece band up there with me. They’re singing harmonies too. We’re making music on the spot. It’s a whole new life to my career. It makes me feel like I’m starting all over again in the best way, because I’ve learned so much from the last ten years, and now I get to start over and build a brand-new brand, and folks are resonating with it, so I’m just chomping at the bit to get it all out there.”
No one has a first-hand look at Brown’s excitement over his new solo career than Amberly, who gets a firsthand look at how excited Brown is to make music on his own.
“He’s a kid in a candy store,” Amberly says. “That’s exactly what it’s been. Just joy, all day, every day … It’s a new level of joy that I haven’t seen. I think with any change, especially when you like change as much as this man does, which I do not, so I can’t relate. But anytime you have change, there’s a certain amount of excitement that comes with it. I was prepared for that, but it was not what I was prepared for, just how much he’s enjoying the music, how much he’s enjoying — he wakes up every day just grateful to be alive in a way that is remarkable and astounding and awe-inspiring. I’m so thankful to be on this ride with him.”
With the success of “Hers Ain’t Mine,” and a new Happy Wife, Happy Life album on the way, Brown has never been more certain that his decision to leave Home Free and make music on his own was the right decision to make.
“You always go, ‘Oh, is this the right choice?’ But I can’t say enough, God has been so clear in telling me that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” Brown shares. “Anytime fear goes up, immediately it’s squashed by life telling me that I’m where I’m supposed to be. And again, the most fulfilling thing for me in this path is doing this with her, being here with her. I don’t want to come here and do interviews by myself. I want to come here and do interviews with her.”
Brown and Amberly have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to help support his new album. More information is available here. Find “Hers Ain’t Mine” and all of Brown’s music and upcoming shows at AustinBrownMusic.com.
