Austin Burke is toasting a broken heart with his new song, “When I’m Drinkin’,” out now. Burke wrote the song with Emma Lynn White, and Jamie Kenney, drawing inspiration from a good stiff drink when recording the heartbreak tune.
“I wanted this track to sound similar to how a good whiskey tastes – warm and smooth,” Burke says of the song. “We tried to keep the vocals warm and allow the guitars and the beat to be as smooth as possible. I’m really looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say about this track.”
The song comes only a few months after Burke released his Changed Everything EP, released in April. After being forced to stay home and off the road, due to the pandemic, the Arizona native determined to release honest and authentic music, and as often as he could.
“Honestly, the past two years have been like a reset in my life professionally,” Burke previously told Everything Nash. “After being forced to slow down when touring came to a halt – I got the chance to take a step back and look at myself in the mirror… to really think about what I want to say. I’m now grateful for the time that I’ve gotten to dig deeper into my music and figure out what I want to say. I’m happy to say that I now have that answer.”
Burke has recently been in the headlines for more than his music. The singer-songwriter recently announced he would give 15 percent of his masters to songwriters, after noticing the disparity in incomes.
“I’ve been able to live off of streaming money, but then I look at my songwriter friends and they’re working three jobs,” Burke explains to Forbes. “The divide and the separation of money is not fair right now.”
Burke hopes that his act inspires other artists to follow suit as well, and spread the income from a song in a way that is more equitable.
“I look at it as how can I help the thing I love most?” Burke reflects. “It’s something I’m very passionate about. I love writers and writing and songwriting and if we don’t change, [that’s] going to go away.I know that I’m supposed to do something, and I know that I’m supposed to be an example for other independent artists that you can do it on your own. You can do these things and you can make a change and make a difference.”
