Ben Fuller and Carrie Underwood are opening up about their “If It Was Up To Me” duet. The song is from Fuller’s forthcoming Walk Through Fire album, out on June 6.
“When I wrote this song, I kept thinking about how difficult life can be,” Fuller shares. “And that if I was in control, and it was up to me, I’d make it a lot easier on myself – but I’d never know then how good God’s plans can be. I’m so grateful Carrie wanted to share her love for Jesus on a song with me. She was so kind and calm when we were in the studio. And I’m pretty sure I smiled almost as big as God did when she stepped up to the mic that day!”
“Ben is such a talented singer and songwriter, and I love the joy he brings to singing about his faith, which we have in common,” adds Underwood. “I was honored when he asked me to sing with him on ‘If It Was Up To Me,’ and I love how our voices blend on such a positive and uplifting song.”

The song says in part, “If it was up to me, there’d be no gravel roads / No wounds, no blisters on my soul / Pain might come, but it wouldn’t come for me / If it was up to me, I’d take the easy ride / But I’d miss the grace that changed my life / Thank God I’m not the one in charge of things / I’d never know how good Your plans could bе / If it was up to me.”
Underwood is of course no stranger to duets. She’s collaborated with Randy Travis, Jason Aldean, Ludacris, Willie Nelson, Papa Roach and more. Her latest No. 1 hit is “I’m Gonna Love You,” a duet with Cody Johnson.
“He’s awesome,” Underwood boasts, speaking of Johnson. “I remember the first time I met him. I know he’s been working at this for a long time. Whenever somebody kind of comes onto the scene, it seems like it happens so fast. But I remember the first time I met him, and I was like, ‘I like that guy.’ I came away from that meeting — not meeting, it was just at an awards show — but I told my manager, ‘I like him. He just seems very genuine and like the real deal.’ And he’s got an incredible voice.
“So I feel like it was inevitable that we would sing together at some point,” she adds. “And I love this song so much, and getting to be in the studio and be around him on the video shoot and things like that. He’s just, he is the real deal. And he’s like this cowboy that sings, which I love that.”
