Ben Gallaher Honors Bryan Adams With ‘Cuts Like A Knife’ Cover [EXCLUSIVE]

Ben Gallaher is already known as a stellar singer and a guitar virtuoso, both skills he shows off in his new song, out now. The Pennsylvania native just released a cover of Bryan Adams’ ‘Cuts Like A Knofe,’ first released more than 40 years ago, in 1983.

It was Gallaher’s longtime producers, Neil Thrasher and Patrick Thrasher, who first had the idea for Gallaher to do the song.

“I was like, ‘That song’s freaking awesome,'”Gallaher recalls to Everything Nash. “Bryan’s one of the best singers, ever, in my opinion.”

Gallaher’s producers also had the idea for him to sing the song in the original key that it was written in, a challenge that Gallaher met head-on.

“I did it, and I think Neil and Patrick brought out the next level of my range vocally that I had never really explored. I didn’t even really know it was there,” Gallaher admits. “I would say the sign of a great producer is pulling something out of an artist that he doesn’t even know is living in there, and just bringing it out of them. ‘Cuts Like A Knife,’ that’s how it came out, and I was blown away when I first heard the vocal. I was like, ‘Who’s that guy?'”

Gallaher also played all of the guitar parts on the original song himself, determined to pay homage to the song’s legacy.

“You can’t play a different solo.,” Gallaher maintains. “You can’t write your own. I mean, you could, but it would be not a cool thing to do, because that sound and song and solo is so iconic and identifiable. So, it’s a tribute. We wanted to pay homage to Bryan Adams, and that era of music. It’s such a timeless era of music, and we wanted to do it as a tip of the hat, as a nod. We didn’t want to make our own version and have it completely different. That wasn’t the point. I don’t know if Bryan’s heart it yet, but if he does, I hope he likes it.”

In addition to being accustomed to being a first-time father, with the arrival of his son River over the summer, the 32-year-old is also working on another album, after Country in the House was released in early 2023.

“I’ve been in the studio for the last few weeks, finishing up this next batch of songs that we’re putting on a new record that’s coming out, so we’ve been in the weeds with that … I think it’s a full project, but there will be a couple that will be linked with a couple that are already out,” Gallaher reveals. “I just finished putting guitars on it. It takes me a while, because I’m writing all of the guitar parts and solos and stuff, and I really do take my time, and try to find the right parts that marry just perfectly. I feel like for me, a guitar is an extension of what I do. That’s a really fun process for me, writing the solos.”
