Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are giving fans a glimpse into their personal lives with the video for their current single, “Happy Anywhere.” The song, which was released on Friday, July 24, was actually written and recorded before their previous hit, “Nobody But You,” but felt more timely than ever while the couple is home together during the coronavirus pandemic. Thankfully, Gwen’s brother Todd was willing to step in and film the video, while they were all quarantining at Blake’s Oklahoma ranch.
“We ended up making the video up here, and that was a blast,” Blake revealed on the Today Show. “Last year, I had been drinking, and after one of the episodes of The Voice last year, I was talking to Alex, one of the directors. For whatever reason, I bought a video camera. I had no business buying it, some kind of big-time camera. I had it here in Oklahoma, and there was nothing else to do.
“We were putting out this single, and so we were like, ‘Hey Todd, you know how to run a video camera? Will you make a video for us, for our new single?'” he continued. “And so Gwen’s brother Todd figured out how to run this camera, and now we’ve got this video for the new song. Things just kind of fell into place. We have found ways to keep ourselves busy around here.”
Neither Blake nor Gwen planned on releasing another collaboration together so soon after “Nobody But You,” but felt the song and its message was especially important now.
“I learned a long time ago that if something’s working for you, you just keep going with it,” Blake said of their decision to release another collaboration. Blake has also been enjoying doing things he didn’t have time to do before, since he normally spends much of his time on the road.
“We’ve been doing things that I wished I had time to do for the last 20 years I guess,” Blake revealed. “That’s literally stupid things like pick blackberries. We grew a garden, grew several acres of sweet corn.”
For Blake, there isn’t a better time to release “Happy Anywhere” than right now.
“‘Nobody But You’ was a big song for us, but we actually recorded ‘Happy Anywhere’ before that. We were waiting for the right time to release it, and I knew that time was now,” Blake told People. “We’re all still socially distancing, so there’s no better time to be happy anywhere with the person or people you love. It doesn’t matter where in the world you are — as long as you’re with them, you’re happy.”
