Blake Shelton doesn’t care if people buy his entire record or not. The 48-year-old just wants people to listen to whatever he releases, however they choose.
“I don’t care how people buy music as long as they’re interested enough to buy it,” Shelton says (via WKML). “I just want to make music, and perform it, and write it. It doesn’t make me or break me as far as how people get their hands on it. As long as they want it is all I care about, ’cause I know they will find a way to get it.”
Shelton has a Top 25 hit with “Texas,” the debut single from his next album, and his first on BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville. The music industry has come a long way since his debut single, “Austin,” was released in 2001, and at least, according to Shelton, is for the better.
“There’s an old saying that used to go around Nashville, and I hated it,” Shelton recalls. “God, I hated it. I don’t hear it much anymore, but I used to hear these old guys that used to be in power say, ‘People don’t know what they like. They like what they know, and they’re gonna buy whatever we release.’ I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”
Shelton already has a hit with “Texas,” but he hints there is a lot more music coming, likely in the near future.
“I have some things cut, but I’m gonna keep recording until they tell me time’s up,” Shelton tells Taste of Country..
“The truth is they’re probably gonna wait and see what happens with this song,” the Grand Ole Opry member continues. “Does it go fast? Does it go slow? Then they’ll probably start the clock.”
Shelton has released dozens of singles throughout his career, but says “Texas” might be among his favorites.
“This particular song I’m really fired up about,” Shelton tells Entertainment Tonight. “It’s way different than anything I’ve ever done before. It’s your typical story, a guy got dumped by the girl country song. But musically, it’s way different. And anytime I get to show up and be in a music video and just get to wear what I’d probably just be wearing today anyway, I’m always excited about that.”
In addition to working on his next album, Shelton is also helping honor one of his biggest musical idols in early 2025. Shelton is currently working on a documentary about Keith Whitley, who passed away in 1989.
“Keith Whitley released only three albums during his life, but his music has influenced generations of country music artists,” Shelton says of the inspiration behind the new venture. “I’m proud and honored we get to bring his incredible story to film.”
Shelton recently announced that he is part of a new reality TV talent show, The Road, airing later this year on CBS. He will also spend part of 2025 on tour. The Oklahoma native will kick off his Friends & Heroes Tour 2025 on February 27 in Lexington, Kentucky, joined by Trace Adkins, plus Craig Morgan, Deana Carter and Emily Ann Roberts.
