Blake Shelton provided a happy ending to mother and daughter nurses who have endured plenty of struggles over the last few months. Daughter Sylvia Johnson is a nurse in New Orleans in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, while her mother, Bridgette Robinson, a nursing assistant, was on a ventilator fighting for her life after contracting coronavirus.
“It definitely was scary and heartbreaking,” Sylvia said on the Today Show. “Especially the fact that she’s my best friend.”
“It was really hard,” Bridgette added. “The only thing I remember is waking up and hearing my grandson on Facebook telling me that he needs me, (saying) ‘Grandma, don’t leave me. I love you, I need you.”’
Today host Hoda Kotb spoke to Sylvia and Bridgette, where she surprised them with an appearance by Blake, who had a special song for the mother and daughter.
“Everything about this disease –– I mean, you guys are out on the frontlines fighting it, and now you’re a survivor of it,” Blake said, before launching into his No. 1 hit, “God Gave Me You,” while self-isolating at his Oklahoma ranch. “You got each other, and that’s really what this is all about. There’s literally a light, shining bright, on that screen right there. It’s awesome to meet both of you guys.”
“The whole time I heard you guys talking, you keep throwing it back to God,” he continued. “I love hearing you say that. I want to dedicate this song from me, to you guys as nurses being out there on the frontlines, but really I think this song really speaks to your relationship with each other, if you ask me.”
Blake and his girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, just celebrated their duet, “Nobody But You,” staying at the top of the charts for a second week. Watch Blake’s performance on Today here.
