Blake Shelton Vows to Stay Away From His Mullet After ‘No Body’ Video

Blake Shelton channeled ’90s country music with his latest single, “No Body,” out now. The video for the song features the once-popular country line-dancing, as well as Shelton’s trademark mullet, all ways to honor the era of country music that inspired Shelton to launch his own career in country music.

“I remember saying to [producer] Scott Hendricks, ‘Wow, man, this would’ve had a line dance to it if it had come out in the ’90s,’ ” Shelton recalls to People. “That was the last time we ever looked back.”

Assembling a group of talented dancers for the video was easy, but wearing his mullet again was something that Shelton doesn’t want to repeat anytime soon.

“[It] felt completely natural to me,” Shelton quips of the uncomfortable hairstyle. “Especially making the video in this particular bar. The air conditioning wasn’t on. It was hot in there.”

“Hair was sticking to my neck and the side of my face. And I remember thinking, ‘Oh yeah, this is why I ended up cutting my mullet off,'” he continues. “Not because it wasn’t cool anymore or trendy, just because it was physically irritating.”

Shelton was known in the early years of his career for his mullet, and not necessarily in a good way. But now that the mullet is back in style, the 46-year-old wants nothing to do with it.

“I guess I don’t care about trends, because when I had the mullet, it wasn’t cool,” Shelton says. “And now that mullets are cool, I don’t have one. So I guess I don’t follow. I should. I’m not against them. I’m just always a little bit late.”

Shelton says that “No Body,” written by Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear, is one of his favorite songs that he has ever released.

“I get excited and feel like a kid every time we release new music,” Shelton says. “But this song in particular takes me back to the ‘90s when I was in high school and first moved to Nashville, because it feels like what the music sounded like at that time.”

“No Body” is from a forthcoming new album, which has yet to be announced. Find “No Body” and all of Shelton’s music at BlakeShelton.com.
