Bobby Bones is once again partnering with Purina Dog Chow for their Service Dog Salute campaign, a cause he is passionate about. The Service Dog Salute, which helps provide service dogs for veterans with PTSD and other challenges after returning from service, is a cause the award-winning radio host gladly supports.
“I’ve been doing it for years and years and years, before Purina reached out,” Bobby told Everything Nash. “What was great about them reaching out is they were doing it too at the same time. So we both were finding service dogs, spending the money, making sure vets got them, but we were doing it apart. And as you know, there’s definitely strength in numbers. So we started working together last year, which was fantastic for me. Each service dog is like $20,000. And that’s why less than one percent of vets are able to get one, because of money. So my goal, and Purina Dog Chow’s goal, has been to get as many as possible.
“We’re working with Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue, and also Got Your Six Service Dogs,” he remarked. “It’s just for me so fulfilling because I owe every single person that’s out sacrificing for me. I owe them when I can give them.”
If there’s one thing Bobby doesn’t have a lot of, it’s time. In addition to his Bobby Bones Show, airing on iHeartRadio, he is also filming his upcoming Breaking Bobby Bones series on National Geographic, as well as hosting his own podcast, among other ventures. But for him, partnering with Purina Dog Chow’s Service Dog Salute campaign was an easy decision.
“There are a few causes, honestly, that I am really invested in,” shared the 40-year-old. “St. Jude Children’s Hospital, I work with them a lot extensively because I was in the hospital as a kid for a long time. If it wasn’t for church groups and people helping with my bills, I wouldn’t have been able to afford it. So St. Jude does that. But I’m such a dog guy. I am so into animals in general.
“And aside from that, I’ve just been so invested in trying to give back to the military, and those two work together,” he continued. “Once I found out that service dogs were $20,000 each on average, I was like, ‘Man, how in the world is someone supposed to afford that?’ So I was personally moved and that’s how I got started the same way that Purina Dog Chow’s has been doing it. We’re just lucky we found each other, I guess.”
Bobby recalls one specific experience he had, where he got to see personally see the impact Purina Dog Chow’s Service Dog Salute campaign had on someone, which made him more determined than ever to continue to support the worthwhile cause.
“There was one guy in particular that was really cool, who had his dog with him,” Bobby recounted. “He had been protecting the presidents at Camp David. He had served in other places too, but had seen a lot and he had PTSD. He was talking about how much he was struggling with it. He would hear a car backfire and jump under the table. He would have panic attacks at night while he was sleeping … [He got] a service dog. And when he has a panic attack while he’s sleeping or at night, or the daytime, the dog comes and lays on his chest. It’s been trained to do that.”
“I just feel like we have to try to make it as easy as possible for vets when they come back, as it possibly can be,” he added.
Thankfully, it’s easy for other people to support Purina Dog Chow’s Service Dog Salute campaign as well.
“What I’m encouraging people to do is to buy a marked bag of Purina Dog Chow now through Thanksgiving,” Bobby said “That’s my goal, and Purina Dog Chow is going to donate up to a $100,000. I’m very excited about that. I love what they do, and love what the listeners have been able to do. And now we can all do it together.”
