Carrie Underwood has a new duet out! The American Idol alum joins Christian singer Ben Fuller on “If It Was Up To Me,” out now.
The song says in part, “If it was up to me, there’d be no gravel roads / No wounds, no blisters on my soul / Pain might come, but it wouldn’t come for me / If it was up to me, I’d take the easy ride / But I’d miss the grace that changed my life / Thank God I’m not the one in charge of things / I’d never know how good Your plans could bе / If it was up to me.”
Country music fans may not be familiar with Fuller, but he is behind some of Christian music’s biggest hits, including “If I Got Jesus,” “Who I Am,” “Let It Begin” and more.
Underwood might be a country music superstar, but she has been very vocal about her faith. She released her album full of hymns, My Savior, in 2021. She will perform a Christian song on the Songs of Faith Easter episode of American Idol on April 20.
The Grand Ole Opry member is also no stranger to duets. She most recently had a multi-week, No. 1 hit with “I’m Gonna Love You,” her collaboration with Cody Johnson. The duet made Underwood an even bigger fan of Johnson.
“He’s awesome,” Underwood boasts. “I remember the first time I met him. I know he’s been working at this for a long time. Whenever somebody kind of comes onto the scene, it seems like it happens so fast. But I remember the first time I met him, and I was like, ‘I like that guy.’ I came away from that meeting — not meeting, it was just at an awards show — but I told my manager, ‘I like him. He just seems very genuine and like the real deal.’ And he’s got an incredible voice.
“So I feel like it was inevitable that we would sing together at some point,” she adds. “And I love this song so much, and getting to be in the studio and be around him on the video shoot and things like that. He’s just, he is the real deal. And he’s like this cowboy that sings, which I love that.”
Last year, Underwood joined rock band Papa Roach for a powerful song, “Leave A Light On,” which she recently performed with them in Las Vegas. 100 percent of the proceeds from he song go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), which will receive royalties generated from both artists from the song, in perpetuity.
“It’s a cause that’s very near and dear to Papa Roach and to Jacoby Shaddix, who is the main vocalist,” Underwood tells Good Morning America. “When they asked me to come sing on the song, I loved the song, and I loved their cause. They work a lot with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and they want to help people. They use their life story.”
