Carrie Underwood had a dream come true when she performed with Dwight Yoakam on Tuesday night, July 27, for CMA Summer Jam. The American Idol alum invited Yoakam to join her on stage during her set, where they collaborated on two of this hits, “A Thousand Miles” and “Guitars, Cadillacs.”
Underwood also gushed about the performance on social media.
“Never in a million years would I have thought I would get to share the stage with someone this cool!,” she posted. “[Dwight Yoakam], you are a LEGEND and, now, a friend as well! Thank you! #CMASummerJam Guitars…Cadillacs…And Cowboy Hats.”

The mother of two kicked off her set with “Cowboy Casanova,” followed by hits like “Southbound,” “Two Black Cadillacs,” “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “Before He Cheats,” among others. She also invited Mickey Guyton to the stage, who debuted a new song, “All American.” Underwood followed performances by Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan, but joked that it was only right that she was the final performance of the night.
“I think everybody knew that closing this thing down was a woman’s work,” she quipped.
Shelton opened CMA Summer Jam by performing several of his hits, including “Ole Red,” “God’s Country,” “Boys ‘Round Here” and “Happy Anywhere,” which included his new bride, Gwen Stefani. Shelton also invited Carly Pearce to the stage, introducing her as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, to sing her “Next Girl” single.
Bryan performed his current single, “Waves,” twice, after explaining that he was unhappy with his original performance due to intense allergy issues. He also sang “Country Girl (Shake It For Me),” “One Margarita” and “I Don’t Want This Night to End,” among others. Bryan introduced rising star, Lainey Wilson, who sang “Things a Man Oughtta Know,” and joined Cole Swindell in singing “Single Saturday Night.”
Underwood’s CMA Summer Jam performance came shortly after she announced the release of My Gift (Special Edition), adding three new tracks to her My Gift Christmas album, which was first released last year.
“My Gift is an album I’ve wanted to make from the beginning of my career,” Underwood says. “It’s been such a blessing to share this special music and I’m excited to share even more with the release of My Gift (Special Edition).”
CMA Summer Jam replaces what is normally CMA Fest, which had to be canceled for the second year in a row, because of the pandemic. CMA Summer Jam will continue with a second night on Wednesday, July 28, with Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett and Florida Georgia Line among the performers. Both nights will air as part of a TV special in September.
