It’s been almost two years since Charlie Daniels passed away, and now his grave has been subject to vandalism, more than once. According to the Country Music Hall of Fame member’s Facebook page, police are patrolling where Daniels is buried, after a few unfortunate incidents took place where he is buried.
“Thanks to someone stealing a dogwood sapling & watering bag this weekend (seriously!) & someone gluing a spouse’s military ID on the marble of Charlie’s marker a few months ago, MJPD will be increasing patrols near his grave & video surveillance will soon be installed,” a post reads on Facebook, signed by Team CDB.

Later, Daniels’ team clarified the comments, further explaining what had happened, and the steps that were being taken to keep Daniels’ grave safe.
“Several months ago, an expired military dependent (spouse’s) ID of a woman who has since been divorced from her military spouse was superglued to the marble on the marker,” the statement reads. “It was not a medal, it was not dog tags. The family welcomes anyone leaving items, what they do not want is to have items glued to the marker, or have any trees that the family planted nearby (with the full consent of the cemetery owner) dug up and stolen. The newly planted dogwood replaced one of six that were planted last year. One tree died, a new but smaller one was planted a few weeks ago, and someone dug it up and stole it, along with the watering bag at its base.”
Daniels is buried at the Mount Juliet Memorial Gardens, in Daniels’ hometown of Mount Juliet, Tennessee. He was honored with a procession by the Mt. Juliet Police Department and the Patriot Guard Riders. from Sellers Funeral Home to the cemetery where Daniels’ was buried. The procession followed a star-studded service, with Vince Gill, Trace Adkins, Gretchen Wilson and Travis Tritt among the performers.
Daniels passed away on July 6, 2020, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke at a hospital near his home. Daniels was honored received the Patriots Honor Walk as his body was taken to a waiting hearse, in recognition of all of the work Daniels did for the military.
“When it was time, we walked with dad’s body on the gurney as it made its way to the hearse,” Daniels, Jr. recalled. “All the ER staff who tended to dad, friends, employees, friends of ours in law enforcement and many others lined the hallway and outdoors as we got ready to leave for the funeral home. Since I had driven myself that morning, I got in line behind the car that mom had been brought to the hospital in. Not only were there friends, and the CDB family in the motorcade, several of MJPD and Wilson County’s finest led the way, and at least two dozen Patriot Guard Riders bringing up the rear on their machines.
“When we turned off I-40 onto Mt. Juliet Road, we started to see people gathered along the street,” he recalled. “With just 45 minutes notice, people stepped out of their places of work, left their homes and in the middle of a pandemic, lined the streets of Mt. Juliet to pay their respects to my father who, despite having moved to Lebanon in 1979, still called Mt. Juliet home. A good friend of ours who had a lot of pull got the land ‘honorarily annexed’ into Mt. Juliet … It was an overwhelming display of love, honor and respect. And it made me extremely proud to be his son.”
