Trace Adkins and Tracy Lawrence were among the artists who performed Wednesday night’s public memorial, the Patriotic Community Service, honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Daniels. The service, held outside Sellers Funeral Home in Mount Juliet, included both songs and tributes to the country legend.
“Of all the musical things he will be remembered for, which there’s many, many … I think the man that Charlie Daniels was supersedes all of that,” Tracy said (via The Tennessean). “He was a gracious, humble, deeply convicted man about the things that he believed in.”
Trace said Charlie was “seeped in wisdom, but tempered with humility … I can honestly say there’s a hole in the fabric of this country today. Charlie Daniels left that hole.”
The service began with a 21-gun salute and a helicopter flyover. President Donald Trump also sent a video message.
“He loved our country, he loved our family and he loved his music,” the President said. “He was special. He was as good as it gets.”
Mike Huckabee, who called Charlie “one of the greatest Americans any one of us have ever known,” said “Charlie Daniels’ America is a place we’re all better off for having him touch it, love it and lead it. We’re gonna miss him dearly, but he will never play again to an empty seat. He’s going to fill Heaven’s stadiums with his unique sound and soul,” adding, “And the devil won’t ever touch or tempt him again because he is the best that’s ever been.”
Tracy also sang “Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” while Trace played his patriotic song, “Arlington,” honoring Charlie’s devout patriotism and support of those in the military. Darryl Worley performed “I Miss My Friend.”
Charlie passed away on Monday, July 6, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. His funeral, which will include performances by Vince Gill, Trace, Gretchen Wilson and more, will be held on Friday, July 10, at World Outreach Church in Murfreesboro.
