Chris Young is embracing his childhood faith with his new single, “If That Ain’t God.” The faith-based song, from his upcoming Raised on Country album, reminded Chris of his early years, growing up going to church, which is why the song resonated with him so much.
“I grew up singing in church, and my grandfather was an elder in the church that I used to go to,” Chris told People. “Somebody would go up with a pitch pipe and they would blow a note on a pitch pipe and everybody would sing in [an] eight-part harmony. So that was something that I picked up on really early on.”
Although the 35-year-old is normally private about his personal matters, he does say that his faith is usually his “very first point of reference” when it comes to making decisions. He also relies heavily on his family, who he knows will always be honest with him, especially when it comes to new music.
“When I get something done, I send it to them and I’m like, ‘Yes? No? What do you think?'” Chris said, adding that “If That Ain’t God” earned their hearty approval. “My family is very close, so they are very blunt. This one everybody really got into.”
Chris is off the road because of coronavirus, but he isn’t wasting his time. In addition to finishing up the songs on Raised on Country, he is also working on honing another skill: cooking! The Tennessee native sometimes shares some of his culinary creations on social media, although not everyone agrees with the way he cooks some of his foods.
“I posted a photo of this steak that was medium-rare — perfectly cooked the way that I wanted it — and there were so many people in my comment section, like, ‘It’s not done put it back into the oven,'” Chris recalled. “I was like, ‘It’s supposed to look like that, I promise!”
