Chris Young‘s latest single, “If That Ain’t God,” is about all the different places and times when people find God. For Chris, it’s not just in the big moments, but in the little ones as well, when he feels the most spiritually connected.
“Sometimes we catch ourselves — especially this year with all that’s dragged us down with worrying about so many different things — I find this song so uplifting,” Chris told CMT. “Because, it’s saying, ’Hey, actively look for some of the stuff that is great that we’ve overlooked.’ And doesn’t that make you want to pray?'”
It’s not just a baby born, it’s not just someone beating cancer,” he continued. “Sometimes it’s things like in the bridge of the song about seeing a red sunset over blue water. Something that simple that we can take for granted. And then, man, it hits you. Like, how would this exist if not for God?”
The Tennessee native personally feels closest to God when he’s doing what he loves the most — making music.
“I am so grateful that I was given that gift,” Chris reflected. “Because no matter what, to be able to have a gift and a passion for music — from when I was a kid to now — and to be able to do that for a living? That’s a blessing. That’s a God-given thing.”
“If That Ain’t God” was originally written by Matt Roy, Mitch Oglesby and Greylan James, with Chris rewriting part of the chorus after they sent him the song. Still, although Chris was drawn to the song, he credits his fans with convincing him to record “If That Ain’t God,” and including it on his upcoming Raised on Country record.
“It doesn’t matter if I love it,” Chris told People. “As far as making something a single, you really want everybody else to be just as excited about it as you are. It was really cool seeing the level of response that I got from people [about ‘If That Ain’t God’]. So being able to put it out there and make it the new single off the record and have something they haven’t heard yet is pretty awesome.”
