Clint Black Shares Story Behind ‘America (Still in Love With You),’ Written With Steve Wariner

Clint Black is sharing the story behind “America (Still in Love With You).” Clint, who wrote the song with his longtime friend Steve Wariner, included it on his upcoming album, Out of Sane, which will be released on Friday, June 19.

“That’s a song that comes out of the great appreciation for the life I have here, and all the opportunities I’ve had,” Clint said in a video he shared on social media. “It was just an idea; when Steve Wariner came over to the house to show me his new guitar, his Steve Wariner model, Gretsch. I told him about the idea. He loved it and said, ‘We ought to write it.’ I just launched into it, and didn’t even ask. I just started working on it. The first question was, ‘What do we do with it musically?’ and it grew from there. Before we were even half-finished with the song, I was over on my computer, just texting musicians, and trying to find out who was available when.

“Four days later, we were recording the song, and barely got it finished in time to include it on this new album, Out of Sane,” he continued. “I managed to get a homemade video made for it, during quarantine … We really wanted it to be a song for all of our friends who have differing points of view, and a different way of looking at America. But as different as we all are, we have one thing in common: we love this country, and we want to see it do well, and we want to see everybody in good health, get back to work, and come together and unite to keep helping this country to be what it aspires to be.”

The Grand Ole Opry just announced that Clint and Darius Rucker would perform this Saturday, June 20. The show, which begins at 7:00 PM CT, will be streamed live. Find more information at Opry.com.
