Cody Johnson just announced plans for another double record. Less than two years after Johnson released his Human: The Double Album in 2021, the Texan announces another double album with the 24-track Leather.
“I’m working on a new double album,” Johnson reveals to Audacy’s KMLE Country 107.9. “I think we’re going to release this one a little differently, but it will be 24 tracks total.”
The singer-songwriter says his forthcoming new set of tunes is the favorite he has ever recorded, and with good reason.
“This round of 24 songs I have to say is the best round of songs I have ever recorded, and I feel like that’s the way it should be,” Johnson shares. “Each album should outdo the last one. There’s some fun stuff, I think the theme of this new album is fun. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a ballad or whether it’s tongue-in-cheek kind of fun. It all has to be fun, it all has to make you kind of want to move around and bob your head a little bit.”
Johnson previously revealed that his new album included a duet with Carrie Underwood, making him an even bigger fan of the country music superstar.
“I actually just recorded a duet with her yesterday for my new album coming out,” Johnson shared ahead of the CMT Music Awards last month, where he won the trophy for Performance of the Year. “And getting to know her — man, she’s such a pro and everybody that she surrounds herself with are all very professional, as well. So I don’t mean this to sound bad, but it’s kind of hard to compete with that.”
Johnson might soon need a bigger shelf to hold all of his awards. He is currently nominated for three ACM Awards, including for Single of the Year, Song of the Year and Visual Media of the Year, all for his hit single, “‘Til You Can’t.”
“What a great way to start a morning!” Johnson said when the news was announced. “We are back on tour this weekend and I’m happy to be with my band and team who helped propel this song to such success. Thank you COJONation fans and country radio for embracing this song. And a big congrats to songwriters Ben Stennis and Matt Rogers. I will never be more in awe of the power of a great country song!”
Garth Brooks and Dolly Parton will host the ACM Awards ceremony. The 2023 ACM Awards will take place on Thursday, May 11 at 8:00 PM ET, streaming live on Amazon Prime Video, from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. A limited number of tickets are available to enjoy the ceremony in person, at SeatGeek.com.
Leather will be released in late 2023 or early 2024. Find all of Johnson’s music and upcoming shows at CodyJohnsonMusic.com.
