Cody Johnson Doesn't Want His Daughters to Follow in His Footsteps

Cody Johnson is an incredibly proud father of two daughters. The former rodeo star and prison guard says his girls, Clara Mae and Cori, think they want to be singers like their father, although he admits their view of what he actually does isn’t entirely realistic.

“If you ask them, they want to be a country singer, which I’ve told them, don’t do,” Johnson reveals. “It’s like, you think it’s easy because you ride around on private jets and buses and stuff with Dad, and we have these expensive trips and all this stuff. And it really looks really good on paper, but I was like,’ You guys weren’t around for all the hard work, like the real hard work. Like looking at a McDonald’s and not being able to go in and buy food. Literally starving for country music.'”

Johnson says that his daughters also say they want to be a veterinarian, a teacher, a pastor and a lawyer. But even he admits chances are good that they will follow in his footsteps.

I’ve tried, to talk them out of country music, but the problem is they both sing really damn good,” he says. “I haven’t told them that yet though. I’m keeping that a little secret. Brandi’s like, ‘You know, they’ve got it right? Like, whatever you have, they’ve got it.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, but don’t tell them. Don’t tell them till they’re older. Let them make their own decisions.’”

Johnson is back at radio with “The Fall.” The song, from his Leather Deluxe Edition, comes following his multi-week, No. 1 hit, “I’m Gonna Love You,” with Carrie Underwood.

“’The Fall’ is one of those songs that I feel like should be on a movie soundtrack,” Johnson says. “It should be on a movie soundtrack because it paints that picture of — you can see the struggle to get to the success. And I think for me, I picture guys like Michael Jordan. You see all the work and all the tired and the angry and the tears and the blood, and you get to the successful moment. And you can even apply that to relationships too, but it has that that overall movie quality about it.”

Johnson ties Morgan Wallen and Lainey Wilson with nominations at the upcoming ACM Awards, with seven, including for the night’s highest honor, Entertainer of the Year. Only  Ella Langley has more, with eight nods.

Johnson will also perform during the live ACM Awards ceremony. Reba McEntire will return as host, The 2025 ACM Awards will air live on Prime Video from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas on Thursday, May 8 at 8:00 PM ET. A very limited number of tickets are still available at SeatGeek. More information is available at ACMCountry.com.
