Cody Johnson used his time on stage over the weekend to condemn the attempted assassination on former President Trump, who is currently running for office again. The Texan was performing at the Windy City Smokeout in Chicago on Saturday, July 13, and responded to the news that was circulating that Trump had been shot in the ear in an attempted assassination.
“30 minutes before I went on stage, there was an attempted assassination of former President Trump,” Johnson began. “Here’s what I’ve got to say about it, and I hope you’ll hear me out. I mean, it’s my microphone; I can say what I want to, right? The fact that any American citizen would think that what they did today would solve a problem in this country is absolutely disgusting. You want to solve a problem in this country? On Election Day, go in there and vote for who you want. You know why? Because before most of you were born, an American soldier died for you to have the right to disagree with someone.”
Johnson continued with his passionate speech, his voice raising as he poured out his heart on stage.

“I’m tired of the hatred,” Johnson remarked. “I’m tired of the division. I’m tired of people talking about Trump and Biden. There’s people in this crowd that agree with Trump. There’s people in this crowd that agree with Biden. Guess what. That is your God-given American right to believe whatever you want. That right was bought with sacrifice. Sacrifice from a dead police officer. Sacrifice from a dead firefighter. A dead soldier that went over and said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna die for something bigger.’
“So I don’t give a damn who you vote for,” he added. “And I don’t give a damn about how you feel about what’s on the news. There’s only three things I give a damn about tonight. You listening to me? They are red, white and blue.”
In a separate video, Johnson can be heard issuing a challenge to the concert attendees, who were cheering as he continued to speak.

“If you want to put your hands down, I understand,” Johnson said. “I wanna challenge you to do something this year. It’s a very important year for America, ’cause it is an election year. I said it’s an election year, and the last time that we tried to elect a President in this country, we tried to get divided. Listen, it doesn’t matter what color you are, it doesn’t matter what religion, it don’t matter who you voted for. Listen, they tried to divide us all. They tried to divide us on every issue that you could possibly be divided on. So I have a challenge for you: this year when you vote, I want you to not tell anybody on social media or word of mouth who you voted for. Do you want to know why? … If you’re grandfather and my grandfather had asked each other who they voted for, they’d have stepped outside to whip each other’s ass over that question.
“Do you want to know why?” he concluded. “Because men and women before we were born sacrificed their lives for us to have the right to disagree on who we vote for. What makes America beautiful is that we can disagree. I’ve been married to the same women for 15 years, and we don’t agree on everything, okay? There’s three things that matter: the first one is red, the second one is white, the third one is blue. That’s all that matters to me.”
