The iHeartRadio Music Awards were held on Monday, March 27, with some of country music’s artists claiming trophies. Morgan Wallen won Country Artist of the Year, while Cole Swindell won for Country Song of the Year (for “She Had Me At Heads Carolina“), and Cody Johnson won Best New Country Artist. Luke Combs‘ won Country Album of the Year, for Growin’ Up.
Swindell won in a category that included Jordan Davis and Luke Bryan‘s “Buy Dirt,” Kelsea Ballerini and Kenny Chesney‘s “half of my hometown,” Combs’ “The Kind of Love We Make” and Wallen’s “Wasted On You.” The Georgia native spoke out about the tragic Nashville school shooting in his acceptance speech.
“Thank you so much, iHeart. Before I say anything else, I just want to send up my prayers and lots of love back to our community in Nashville, Tennessee,” Swindell said. “It’s hurting beyond belief right now, I just wanted to say that. But also, I have a lot of people to thank. iHeartCountry Radio, thank you so much for playing my music. The songwriters of this song: Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure, Thomas Rhett, who I’m on tour with all summer — y’all come see us.

“And then Tim Nichols and Mark D. Sanders. I could not have done it without y’all. Zach Crowell who produced an amazing record on me,” he continued, also praising his record label, Warner Music Nashville. “Thanks for letting me live my dream. There’s so many people I could thank, but I don’t have all night. This is amazing to be standing here. Thank you for letting me do what I love. And also, thank you to Jo Dee Messina. Without her original song, “Heads Carolina, Tails California,’ I wouldn’t be standing here. As a kid growing up listening to country radio, I’m living proof that you can achieve your dreams.”
Combs was unable to attend the ceremony in person, due to being on his massive World Tour, but he did submit a video of his acceptance speech.
“Hey iHeartRadio, it’s Luke Combs here. I just wanted to say I am honored to have won Country Album Of The Year at the iHeart Awards,” Combs said. “So amazing and couldn’t be more pumped! Thank y’all so much.”
Wallen beat out Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Kane Brown and Combs to be named the iHeartRadio Country Artist of the Year. Johnson was nominated for Best New Country Artist alongside Bailey Zimmerman, Elle King, Elvie Shane and Priscilla Block. See a complete list of winners here.
