Colin Stough has a new music video out. The American Idol alum just released the official video for “Makes Two of Us,” a song that reminisces about a relationship that ended, with those memories tinged with regret.
“The music video for ‘Makes Two of Us’ is about how your mind keeps wandering to your ex after a breakup,” Stough says. “So, in the clip, you see these two characters living their daily lives while constant flashes of memories between them keep happening.
“It shows how often you’re just doing whatever, yet you find yourself completely lost in thought – thinking about the other person,” he continues. “It starts happening so often that you get to a point where you’re just kind of like, ‘Well, if I can’t get ‘em off my mind, what could it hurt to just go there again?’”

“‘Makes Two of Us’ is about that after a breakup thing where you keep thinking about your ex,” Stough says of the song, which he wrote with Alex Maxwell and Cole Taylor. “It’s those lonely moments when your brain kicks in and you start thinking about them, then you start debating on whether or not you should reach out just in case they’re thinking of you too.
“You find yourself wondering if they’re thinking of doing the same, even though you know that reaching out never gets you anywhere and is pretty much a horrible idea,” he adds.
Stough still can’t believe the life he gets to live. A former HVAC worker living in rural Mississippi, the talented singer gets to make a living doing what he loves: writing and performing music. It’s a life he once never thought possible, and wouldn’t have become a reality if his mother hadn’t convinced him to audition for Idol.
“My mom told me, ‘I’m gonna sign you up for American Idol,” Stough recently recalled to Everything Nash. “I was like, ‘No, you’re not. Don’t do that.’ I really didn’t think I was good enough to be out there doing that with all of them. And when she called me up, I was leaving work. She was like, Hey, you need to go by so-and-so’s house and sit down and do these interviews with these folks. Take your guitar.’ And I was like, ‘Mama, I don’t think that you did the right thing.’ I tell everybody this, and it’s the honest-to-God truth: I thought she was getting scammed the whole time.”
