Craig Campbell is heading to Eric Church‘s new bar. Campbell will play his new album, Class of ’89, in its entirety on Wednesday, July 3 at Chief’s on Broadway
“I cut my musical teeth and got my big break performing on Broadway, so it only made sense to go back there and perform songs that had such an impact on my career,” Campbell says. “To get to play them back to back and explain what each one means to me is going to be a blast.”
Class of ’89 includes songs like Clint Black‘s “Killin’ Time,” John Michael Montgomery‘s “Be My Baby Tonight,” Randy Travis‘ “On The Other Hand” and more.
“I have been dreaming of recording this album for as long as I can remember,” Campbell says of the record.. “These songs are some of the reasons I fell in love with country music in the first place. Every song on this album has a story, and each one of those stories shaped me into the country singer I am today. There will never be anyone that can do these songs as good as the originals, but at the very least I hope I made them proud.”
The Georgia native did something bold and unique when recording Class of ’89, using the same musicians that he used when playing on Lower Broadway at the beginning of his career to record the album. Those musicians will also be with him for his performance at Chief’s.
“These are guys I spent years with on the road,” Campbell shares. “When it came time to go into the studio, I knew there was no other band that could play these songs the way I wanted better than my boys. Thank you David Black, Shawn, Aaron, David Karns, Jamie, Tyler and David Spires!”
In addition to his busy music career, including touring all over the country, Campbell and his wife, Mindy, also own Grindstone Cowboy, a coffeeshop, bar and music venue in his hometown of Eagleville, Tennessee. The couple might have never married, and later had two children, if not for Campbell singing “On The Other Hand” one fateful evening.
“Before I met my wife officially, my bass player was dating her roommate,” Campbell recalls. “I ended up at Mindy’s house one night and had a guitar. The very first song she ever heard me sing was ‘On The Other Hand,’ and she said that’s when I came across her radar. At that time, she wasn’t sure about me, but she said I had a great voice. That’s why I wanted to record ‘On The Other Hand.’”
