Craig Morgan Calls Performing at the Grand Ole Opry Without an Audience ‘Super Weird’

Craig Morgan will return to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night, May 23, for a special performance, Grand Ole Opry Salute The Troops Memorial Day Weekend Special, with Steven Curtis Chapman and Kellie Pickler. The show will mark Craig’s second time to perform at the Opry without an audience, due to coronavirus, and the veteran admits it is a bit strange to take the hallowed stage without anyone in the seats.

“It is super weird,” Craig admitted on the Bobby Bones Show. “Playing without an audience is not as weird as people might think, because we do a lot of TV, we do a lot of things like that, where there’s not necessarily a live audience. But it is SUPER weird to do it in a place where you’re used to having a live audience, one of which is almost always sold out. So it’s a little weird to be at the Ryman Auditorium or at the Opry house, doing a show without a live audience, just because of where we’re at.”

Craig’s new album, God, Family, Country, will be out on Friday, May 22. The record has both new versions of some of Craig’s previous hits, as well as several new songs, including “The Father, My Son and the Holy Ghost,” written about the loss of his son, Jerry.

“This album is based on everything that’s happened in my life and my career,” the Grand Ole Opry member said about his new set of tunes. “I feel like I have some of the most quality songs I’ve ever recorded, and there is a new energy here. After all I’ve been through, I’m at one of the most inspired places I’ve ever been.”

The Grand Ole Opry has hosted Saturday night shows for 4924 consecutive weeks. Shows with a live audience are currently suspended through June 6. The Grand Ole Opry’s Saturday performances are available to watch via both Circle and Gray TV stations, DISH Studio Channel 102, Sling TV, among other options. Find more information at Opry.com.
