Craig Morgan has been friends with Blake Shelton for years –– long before either of them had much success in country music. The two have gone through many stages of life together, but Craig never imagined how well Blake would take to being a father to his girlfriend, Gwen Stefani‘s, three sons: Kingston, Zuma and Apollo.
“We talk about our farms, we talk about our families,” Craig told ET Canada, speaking of the conversations the two singers have together. “With he and Gwen and the kids, there was a lot of questions about that, because it’s really fun to see Blake in that role. I got to pick on him in that.”
“I’m just glad they’re not old enough to drink,” he continued with a laugh. “Blake, he’s a great dad. He and Gwen are beautiful people. We just love them to death.”
The fellow Grand Ole Opry members have never collaborated together on a song, but Craig hints that might soon change.
“For the first time in our 15 or 18, 20-year friendship, for the first time we just recently talked about maybe doing something,” Craig revealed. “Blake and I are buddies, and we have been for many years. Our friendship is based on everything except our music, ironically enough. I love Blake. I think he’s one of the most talented singers out there. The guy’s really sharp. He’s great at picking songs, and he’s a pretty decent writer.”
It was Blake who helped propel Craig’s current single, “The Father, My Son and the Holy Ghost” to the top of the iTunes all-genre chart. The song, written about the loss of Craig’s son, Jerry, landed at No. 1 after Blake kept speaking out about the song on social media, and urging his celebrity friends to do the same.
“People don’t know how good Blake’s heart really is. I do,” Craig told CMT. “And I’ve always known that. So it was humbling when Blake did all this, and it was good to know that a lot of the world could see the Blake that I’ve known for a long time. He’s kind of like that country music cheerleader, and people may not know that side of him. And with a platform like he has, I just thought that was the greatest thing ever.
“As a lover of country music, you’ve got to share the good stuff. Blake could’ve been like, ’Oh cool. Craig has this beautiful song out. That’s cool for him,’” Craig added. “Instead, he was insistent that we all listen to it.”
