Dan + Shay have a new version out of “You,” this time an acoustic one. The duo, made up of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, officially released the song in July. Written by Smyers along with Dave Barnes and Jordan Reynolds, the song is from Dan + Shay’s latest Good Things album, out in 2021.
Dan + Shay channeled the intimacy they love to have with their fans when recording the acoustic verion of “You.”
“YOU are the reason that ‘YOU’ has made its way to country radio and all the major country streaming playlists, so we wanted to say thanks by recording a proper acoustic version of the song,” Dan + Shay explained on social media. “Two vocals, one acoustic guitar, just the way we would sing it if we were hanging out at your wedding or on your back porch. Really excited about this one.”
Smyers recently shared the story behind “You,” and how the song evolved from what he and the other writers originally intended.
“I think the original hook was ‘You and Only You,’ which was really cool, and something to write down in the phone, as like, ‘Hey, what about that title?’” Smyers recalled on The Bobby Bones Show. “We threw that out, and we didn’t reinvent the wheel. Dan + Shay, we do love songs. That’s kind of what we do. We’ve been fortunate enough to have a bunch of songs that have become people’s wedding songs. ‘Speechless,’ ‘From the Ground Up,’ that kind of thing. That’s just what works for us. That’s kind of our lane. That’s what we do.”
“You” feels especially meaningful to both Smyers and Mooney, on a personal level, as they both reflect on their own happy marriages. Smyers wed his wife, Abby, on May 13, 2017, while Mooney tied the knot with his wife, Hannah, in a secret wedding on August 9, 2016, celebrating with a lavish ceremony one year later, on October 20, 2017.
“We wanted to make the song about a moment, and the whole song, I feel like, is just that moment,” Smyers says. “You’re standing there with somebody, you’re dancing, it’s just the two of you. I feel like it’s the follow-up to ‘Speechless.’ Whereas ‘Speechless’ was like, that’s the wedding moment. That’s the guy seeing his bride for the first time walk down the aisle, and he’s speechless. This is the moment after that. I feel like this song really works for us, after both celebrating our five-year wedding anniversaries. It’s not just about the wedding. It’s not just about that day. It’s a huge day, but it’s about every day after that. It’s about the long-term. I feel like this song has kind of been that for us.”
