Dierks Bentley has a new song and video, out now. The 49-year-old released “She Hates Me,” a song he wrote with Ashley Gorley, Ross Copperman and Chase McGill. Bentley admits he never planned on releasing the song, but was persuaded to make it his next single by his three children.
“We didn’t plan on this happening, but I played it for my kids, and they loved the song,” Bentley says on Country Countdown USA. “We went in and recorded it, and had “so much fun in the studio. This song rose to the top, and it’s sort of the anti-Valentine’s Day song.”
The video is one of the funniest ones Bentley has ever released, and also might be the most costly as well.
“It had to be expensive,” Bentley admits. “We took over a house, and proceeded to destroy everything in the house. Complete destruction, and that was just the house. It’s been a while since I did the acting thing in a video. It was a 15-hour day, and it turned out really great.”
Bentley recalls the day they wrote “She Hates Me,” which was the precursor to what he thought might be his next hit.
“We were goofing around with this idea before diving into our next ‘serious’ song, really just trying to make each other laugh,” Bentley remembers. “It just fell out, and I didn’t think much more about it after that. But then it really came to life in the studio, and then my kids were requesting it and then I was getting texts from friends who had heard it, so I started taking it more seriously! I love any opportunity to laugh at myself – especially my younger self, and ‘She Hates Me’ definitely provides that.”
Bentley just announced he will embark on his Broken Branches Tour on May 29 in Austin, Texas, joined by Zach Top. The singer’s favorite place to be is on the road, even after all these years.
“I’ve been doing it for a while. We still as a band love being on the road this summer,” Bentley says on Good Morning America. “It doesn’t get old, touring. It actually gets more exciting every year we get a chance to do it. I don’t take it for granted. I just love this time of year, love being out on the road. It’s so fun.”
It makes sense that Bentley is waiting to kick off his tour until the warmer months, since the Arizona native specially loves when he gets to perform outdoors.
“Summertime, playing music outside feels so good,” Bentley says, “And to see all those faces, a lot of them we recognize over the years, and hopefully some new ones as well. But just being a part of the whole circus on the road in the summer as a band, a crew, our fans — just the whole thing coming together every summer is pretty special.”
