Dolly Parton just dropped a new track, “Mary, Did You Know,” from her upcoming A Holly Dolly Christmas album! The song has been a favorite of Dolly’s for years, which is why she was so eager to include it on her holiday project.
“‘Mary, Did You Know?’ is one of the greatest, sweetest, well-written songs that I’ve ever had the chance to sing on,” Dolly said in a statement. “When I was recording it, I got very emotional. It is to me what Christmas is about and I’m proud to be able to sing it for my upcoming album.”
Dolly also spoke out about the song on social media, saying, “In these uncertain times, songs of faith have brought me peace and restored my hope. ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ is a reminder to us all year long that there is always hope even when you least expect it.”
“Mary, Did You Know” is one of a dozen tracks on A Holly, Dolly Christmas, which includes collaborations with Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus, Willie Nelson, Michael Bublé and Jimmy Fallon.
“I have recorded several Christmas classics like ‘Holly Jolly Christmas,’ as well as some new material that I hope might become Christmas classics. I’ve recorded five duets with five very special artists,” Dolly siad of the new set of tunes. “I figured since everybody probably wouldn’t get to celebrate Christmas as usual this year, I wanted to be creative instead of sitting around at the house this summer. So I put on my mask, gloves and practiced social distancing, as well as all of the wonderful musicians and singers, and we proceeded to put together what I think is some of the best work that I’ve ever done.
“Kent Wells produced the album,” she added. “Kent has been my friend, band leader and producer for many years. He’s outdone himself on this one. I’m just hoping that you’re gonna love it as much as we loved putting it together.”
Dolly recently celebrated a No. 1 hit on the Christian charts, with “There Was Jesus,” a duet with Zach Williams.
“I grew up in the church,” Dolly told K-Love. “This particular song, it was just like a Godsend. When I first heard it, I thought, ‘What a well-written song’ … Such wonderful writing. I just loved all the lines on the song. I just felt it. I felt like Jesus was in the room. I’d been actually thinking about doing more faith-based music, and I’d been kind of waiting, and writing some things on my own. But when this came, I felt like it was really a gift from God.”
“Mary, Did You Know” is available now. A Holly Dolly Christmas will be released on October 2. It is currently available for pre-order via Dolly’s website.
