Farmer Wants a Wife is a popular TV series, airing on FOX, but its popularity extends far beyond the United States. The global reality TV dating show, which has aired in 32 countries, is responsible for an astonishing 180 marriages, and 410 children, to date.
It was with that in mind that Allen Foster and Hunter Grayson, two of the four bachelor farmers looking for love, agreed to appear on Farmer Wants a Wife. The show, filmed on each of the farmers’ own ranches, follows a group of single women who trade city life for life in the country, while each vying to become the farmer’s love interest.
“For me it was basically an opportunity to do something that was, quite frankly, something that I would never, ever have thought I would’ve gotten to do as far as finding my person through an alternative way,” Foster tells Everything Nash. “It’s not something that you get the opportunity to do every day. Obviously whatever I’ve been doing hadn’t been working. And so I thought this was a good way and an opportunity to meet my person that I wouldn’t be able to do any other way.”
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and doors just kept opening up,” adds Grayson. “And so, the more I learned about the process and learned about what the show was gonna be, I got to do a little bit of researching and soul-searching on it. The show numbers, they’ve been shown everywhere and it speaks for itself. So that gave me a little bit of confidence behind my decision to keep pursuing this. I don’t want to talk bad about other shows or anything like that, but it’s a classier, more real representation of dating, I feel like.”
It was the idea of the women actually being part of their farm life, and watching how they live their lives day-to-day, which appealed to both men, and why they ultimately agreed to appear on Farmer Wants Wife.
“We’re not going out on luxurious vacations,” Grayson explains. “We’re not living in a mansion on some island around Bora Bora for however long this thing may be, and then you come back to real life, and you pick the guy that is a contractor and he’s not at home all the time. These girls are coming to our ranch, and live and work with us. And so, they’re seeing the real us, and what life would really be like. It’s not the fairytale that other shows have painted life to be like.”
It was knowing that they were able to be their authentic selves, without changing any aspect of their life, which convinced both Grayson and Foster to join the cast of Farmer Wants a Wife.
“It was an opportunity for these women to insert themselves — or not insert themselves — into our life, and to see how they truly liked it, and fit in from their perspective into our daily lives,” Foster says. “And like Hunter said, it’s not some fairytale thing. This is real, and this is what we do. And it’s a pretty good representation of the few weeks that they get to spend here, of how their life could potentially be from here on out. I think that in and of itself is what truly has brought success to this program, is just that they get to experience the true us from square one.”
While it might seem like a recipe for disaster to have city women try to acclimate to family life, both men say the transition for the most part went surprisingly well.
“I was pleasantly surprised at the ladies’ willingness to learn and adapt to this lifestyle,” Grayson says. “They for the most part came from all different facets of life, and they came in and pulled their bootstraps up, and jumped right into the thick of it from the start. For me, my women, they’re absolutely amazing people. And, I’m so glad I had the honor of getting to meet them and spend time with them.”
Jennifer Nettles serves as the show’s host. Farmer Wants a Wife airs on Wednesdays at 9:00 PM CT on FOX.
