Gary LeVox isn’t afraid to sing about his faith. The lead singer of Rascal Flatts has already revealed he is working on a Christian album, where he will finally be able to release songs about something he is passionate about: his Christianity.
“I think anytime I get to sing about Jesus, it kind of takes me to a different place,” Gary said on a recent episode of Land of the BRE Radio on Apple Music Country. “Country music and gospel are just like siblings. It’s always been there. Even back from Elvis – I mean, he was doing it. As Rascal Flatts, I’ve always snuck faith in there in some way, with ‘Broken Road,’ or ‘My Wish,’ or that kind of thing. So I’ve always tried to sneak it in, even if people didn’t know what I was trying to do, I was really trying to sneak a little Jesus.”
Gary, who is also working on a solo country album, admits the success of Rascal Flatts took everyone by surprise, including himself.
“Our first record came out June 6th of 2000, so we were right at the tail end of the boy band thing,” Gary recounted. “So they’re just like, ‘Oh, okay. Now there’s a boy band trying to do country music.’ And literally, our first single went No. 1, and then the second one was Top 5, third one was Top 5, but nobody, I don’t think really took us serious as songwriters, musicians and artists until ‘I’m Movin’ On.'”
The Ohio native understands why people were skeptical of the threesome, at least at first.
“Then they were kind of like, ‘Okay, all right. Maybe these dudes are legit,'” Gary recalled. “So, it took a while, but I hate that man. I used to say it back in the day too. I was like, ‘Could you imagine Aerosmith going in and the label goes, ‘Man, ‘That’s too rock. That’s not rock enough?’ … I think all the doors have been blown open now. Did you ever think you’d hear Bon Jovi on country radio? Nelly? You know what I’m saying? So, there’s something for everybody. We’ve absolutely been like, ‘Man, that ain’t country enough.’
“But country music has something for everybody,” he added. “If you’re traditional, they got it. We really, as a genre, have anything and any style or type of whatever you consider country music, country music. It’s there.”
Rascal Flatts, which also includes Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, just released their latest EP, How They Remember You. The album is available for purchase at RascalFlatts.com.
