Home Free is currently on their Road Sweet Road Tour, but they will take a trip back in time on March 5, for their Ryman Auditorium concert. The five-man group originally planned on playing the show, as part of their Home Free Family Christmas Tour, on December 23, but were forced to postpone the event, due to inclement weather in Nashville.
“The Ryman is my favorite place to play in the whole world, no doubt,” Austin Brown tells Everything Nash. “There’s something about that space. It’s so sacred. Everybody who’s anybody, in any genre, has all been on that stage. It’s so historic, from its Opry days, and now it’s the Ryman. And obviously, they still do the Opry.”
The December 23 show was supposed to be a fond farewell before the Home Free guys spent the holidays with their own family. Instead, the show was unable to take place because of ice and dangerously cold temperatures, a disappointing Christmas send-off for Home Free. Still, with the new date now in March, Brown admits he is happy with the unexpected turn of events.
“[It was] the very last show before Christmas, on December 23rd, and Nashville got iced over,” Brown recalls. “They couldn’t staff the show. So we were like, ‘Well, we have to cancel it.’ And really it’s just a rescheduled show now. It’s not like we lost a day. We put it somewhere we weren’t gonna be performing in March. And honestly, if I’m being real here, I’m a little more excited for a show in March, than a show in December at the Ryman. It’s just more accessible. More of our diehard fans will be able to get there, because it’s not so close to Christmas,”
When Home Free announced they were postponing the show, they did hint they might do some Christmas songs, even as the calendar inches toward spring.
“We don’t have to do all Christmas music necessarily,” Brown says with a laugh. “So don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas music, but it’s the Ryman, so you can do anything there and it’s gonna feel incredible … So if you can’t tell, it’s my favorite place in the world to perform.”
Home Free has a busy 2023, but they are already looking forward to 2024 as well. The all-vocal group will be part of the Country Music Cruise, along with Tracy Lawrence, Clint Black, Neal McCoy, Joe Nichols, Shenandoah, Darryl Worley, Billy Dean and more.
“It is going to be a very unique experience that is unlike any other thing that you would ever experience, if you came to see us at a show on land or at a concert,” Adam Rupp tells Everything Nash. “Because it’s gonna be multiple events that are going to be occurring while on the ship, where you get to experience stuff with us in different ways instead of just the show. The show’s gonna be great, of course, but there’s an intimacy that is unlike anything else that you would experience on land or at a concert venue, because obviously, we’re all together on the ship.
“Now, we still want our privacy. Don’t get me wrong on that,” he adds with a laugh. “But you’ll see us just walking around. We’ll be passing by each other from time to time, and we’ll be out and about. So you’ll be able to interact in a different way.”
Home Free will be joined for their Ryman Auditorium show by Texas Hill, Abby Anderson, Brooke Eden, Maggie Baugh, Mark Wills and his daughter, Macey Wills. Tickets to Home Free’s Ryman Auditorium show can be found at Ryman.com.
