Jake Owen Celebrates 3 Years of Sobriety: ‘I’m Proud of Myself’

Jake Owen is celebrating an important milestone in his life. The 43-year-old is celebrating three years of sobriety, an anniversary date he shared on social media.

“September 16th, 2021 was a pretty big day for me,” Owen says in a video. “Three years ago, I decided that was the day. And that was three years ago, today. 1,096 days ago. 36 months ago. It might honestly be one of the things that I’m most proud of that I’ve ever done in my entire life.”

Owen then shares his own thoughts on what three years of sobriety means to him, and why he made the decision to completely abstain from alcohol.

“So hey there boys and girls, I’m Jake Owen and I sing country music,” the Florida native begins. “And I decided, three years ago today, that I was not going to get on that alcohol anymore. I was not a good person. Knew in my heart  I was a way better person than the guy I was when I drank or just being an idiot. So I said I’m not doing this anymore. I told my friends, I apologized to people that I said things to that I should have never said or done. And most importantly, I told myself that I wouldn’t do it anymore. And I did it!”

Owen goes on to encourage others who also feel the need to quit drinking, offering his own help to anyone who finds themselves where he was three years ago.

“So this really isn’t about me,” Owen says. “I am happy for myself and I’m glad that I made a decision that has not only made my life incredible, but I noticed that it’s inspired other people around me. So I just want you guys to know out there that if you’re considering it, do it. I’ve never ever thought the next morning after seeing some of my buddies tell me how bad their heads hurt or whatever, that I would go ‘Man, I wish I would’ve done that last night’.

“But I just want to tell you guys, thanks for always supporting me,” he adds. “I love you. Life is great and I’ll be here to be your support if you need it. You know, everybody needs a buddy and I’m happy to do that for you. Love you guys.”

Owen captioned the video by reiterating his offer to help, and encouragement to others who also struggle with addiction.

“I’m still working on me, but I’m proud of myself,” Owen writes. “I also am here for ya if you need anything. I’m also so grateful for the people and friends in my life that have supported me and given me grace. I love yall … To anyone out there struggling or feeling like you’re not enough: remember that progress is still progress, even if it’s slow. Be kind to yourself, and don’t let yesterday’s mistakes define your tomorrow. As the saying goes, ‘Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath, smile, and start again.'”

Last year, Owen explained his reason for quitting drinking, revealing he quit almost a year before going public with his decision, after one too many regretful evenings.

“317 days ago I embarrassed myself after drinking too much alcohol one night. It wasn’t the first time either,” Owen said at the time. “The next day I told myself, ‘never again.’ I am better than that, and the people I love the most deserve better. My family, my little girls, and my friends.

“Just wanted to share my journey in case anyone woke up this morning and wants to make a change,” he continued. “None of us [are] perfect… I’m just trying to be the best version of myself these days.”
