Jake Owen Opens Up About Lack of Awards Nominations

Jake Owen received one CMA Awards nomination this year, in the Music Video of the Year category, for “Homemade.” The throwback video for the song, which is from his 2019 Greetings From … Jake album, was enough to earn the Florida native his third CMA Awards nomination, and first in 11 years, 14 years after his freshman Startin’ With Me, was released in 2006, although he’s never been fortunate enough to perform at one.

“I’ve never performed on an awards show, in my entire career,” Jake shared on the Bobby Bones Show. “I’m cool. I’ve had a great career. I used to get mad at stuff like that. I really did, like all artists. I see artists do it. They tweet when they’re like, ‘Oh, I didn’t get the nominations that I want.’ It’s like, ‘Stop. It doesn’t matter.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I have anger,” he continued. “But I don’t tweet about it, because what does that do? It only makes you look like you’re sad and bitter about it. To me, it just is what it is.”

Jake has been enjoying time at home with his girlfriend, Erica, and daughters Olive Pearl and Paris, while off the road because of COVID-19.

“I haven’t been this happy in 15 years, which is weird to say in a time like now,” Jake shared on Southern Living‘s Biscuits & Jam podcast (via People). “I’m hoping with this virus and everything that’s happening is that it breeds that same love and energy into people of understanding that life is fragile and … let’s start taking care of everyone around us more.”

Jake received two other CMA Awards nominations, early in his career, for Musical Event of the Year in 2008 (for “Life In a Northern Town” by Little Big Town, featuring Jake and Sugarland), and New Artist of the Year in 2009.

Jake shares the Music Video of the Year category with Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber, for “10,000 Hours,” Miranda Lambert for “Bluebird,” “I Hope You’re Happy Now” by Carly Pearce and Lee Brice, and “Second One to Know” by Chris Stapleton.

The 2020 CMA Awards will air live from Nashville on Wednesday, November 11, at 8:00 PM ET on ABC.
