Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson had a big hit in 2023 with their “Save Me” duet. The song, which Jelly Roll first included on his self-released 2020 Self Medicated record, became an award-winning, No. 1 hit for both of them, and is credited with helping both of their careers reach new heights.
Before they were duet partners, the two were also good friends. Now, Jelly Roll hints there might be a new duet from them in the near future.
“We’re talking about something,” Jelly Roll hints on Country Countdown USA. “I just talked to her the other day. This is crazy talk — I’m telling too many secrets today. But I told her this time is like the outlaw movement in the ’70s. The outlaws didn’t just have one song. They had catalogues of songs. They built a brand around their kinship. We’re gonna do songs together for 20 years. This is our era. We should work more together.”
Wilson isn’t the only artist Jelly Roll wants to sing with in the near future. The Nashville native says there is a long list of artists he hopes he can collaborate with someday.
“I look at what’s happening now, and it’s hotter now than it was in the ’90s,” Jelly Roll says. “There are more stadium acts now than the 90s. Now, we have Morgan [Wallen], Post [Malone], Luke Bryan, Eric Church, [Luke] Combs, so I think we’re in the golden era. We should talk about it more.”
Since “Save Me,” both Jelly Roll and Wilson have had a long series of hits at radio. But for Jelly Roll, most of his success points back to “Save Me.”
“The truth is, I think if I had never uploaded ‘Save Me,’ and been bold enough to try a different thing, I think I would have achieved what I thought my dream was,” Jelly Roll says.
“My dream was just to sell two to three thousand seats everywhere in the Southeast and Midwest, and my daughter could grow up in the best school district in the state of Tennessee,” he adds. “I had just enough money at the time to afford a house in that school district.”
It was Jelly Roll who had the idea to include Wilson on the new version of “Save Me,” at a time when her career was just taking off.
“I got to show y’all a trick y’all didn’t know she could do … She said, ‘I’ve loved ‘Save Me’ from the first time I heard it, but I never felt it the way I felt it coming until I heard it coming from a woman’s perspective,’” Jelly Roll said when their duet was released. “I think that’s what made this such a beautiful marriage for me. She’s been through some sh– down there in Louisiana, too, you know?”
Jelly Roll is back at the top of the charts with his latest single, “Liar.”
