Jelly Roll Is Focusing on His Health: ‘The Transformation Has Begun’

Jelly Roll is not at all the man he used to be, and for that, he is thankful. The Nashville native revealed last year that he was on a quest to lose weight, and is now opening up about what his life is like, and how his physical changes are impacting every other aspect of his life.

“Part of this journey has really led me back to my childhood,” Jelly Roll writes. “I’m starting to feel a difference. Been back walking, soaking up sun, playing basketball. It’s deeper than just losing weight. I’m getting back in touch with myself in a way I haven’t in a long time. I feel less inflammation, I feel less pain, I have more clarity. I’m a little tired and sore but that’s a small price to pay. The transformation has begun.”

Jelly Roll, who once topped the scalres at more than 500 pounds, has been open about his ongoing health struggles, and his on-and-off battle over the years to lose weight. But this time, with his career at an all-time high, the singer-songwriter is determined to be the best he can be, and is doing the work to achieve his goals.

“I’m probably down 70-something pounds,” Jelly Roll told People earlier this year. “I’ve been really kicking a–. I’m doing two to three miles a day, four to six days a week. I’m doing 20 to 30 minutes in the sauna, six minutes in a cold plunge every day. I’m eating healthy right now.”

Jelly Roll has a Top 5 hit right now with “I Am Not Okay,” the debut single from his Beautifully Broken album, out on October 11. The success of the song means even more to the 39-year-old, since it’s about mental health.

“This means more to me than people will ever know,” Jelly Roll says. “To have a top 10 on country radio is always special but to have it with a song about Mental Health is even cooler.”

Jelly Roll recently performed a new song, “Winning Streak,” during his debut performance on Saturday Night Live. The song was inspired by Jelly Roll’s ongoing commitment to still attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

“Something I do to maintenance my relationship with those drugs is I still attend the meetings but I never share,” Jelly Roll explains to the New York Times (via People). “I just quietly sit and appreciate the message and the meaning.”

“This is the first time that I’ve talked about this publicly,” he continues. “I don’t tell people I go to meetings. So I just sit and I watch, and this kid, he’s going through it. You can tell. One of the old men sitting in there was like: ‘Look, man. It’s all good. Nobody came in here on a winning streak.’”

Jelly Roll is nominated for three CMA Awards, including the night’s highest honor, Entertainer of the Year. He has also been announced as a co-headliner, along with Kane Brown, of this year’s New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash. He has a few more weeks on his Beautifully Broken Tour, which runs through the end of October, with Warren Zeiders and Alexandra Kay serving as his opening acts.
