Jelly Roll performed “Halfway to Hell,” a song from his latest Whitsitt Chapel album, out now.
“I wrote these songs for anybody that’s dealing with the duality of life … It’s always about that somewhere between being right and wrong, because I think that’s the exact place I live in,” Jelly Roll says of the inspiration behind the 13-track project. “I know my heart’s pure. I know my spirit’s right. I also know that I make really politically incorrect jokes. And party sometimes, and I’m a little silly and outrageous.
“But I also know that my heart is to be a man of service and to help people,” he adds. “So I write for those kinds of people, the struggling poet of the broken man. Always trying to be the voice for the voiceless.”
Performing on The Tonight Show is one of several career highs Jelly Roll has been enjoying recently. The 38-year-old just won four People’s Choice Country Awards, including for Male Artist of the Year. Jelly Roll accepted the honor from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was performing as part of his headlining Backroad Baptism Tour.
“I thought when I was here, I didn’t have a chance of winning, but the losers won again, baby,” Jelly Roll said. “This award has nothing to do with me, and it has everything to do with y’all. This was fan-voted. This is for the fans. It’s always for the fans. The underdogs are back on top, baby.
“And I want to say thank you to the People’s Choice Country Awards, for giving an opportunity for me and these 20,000 degenerates to celebrate this together live on national television, from Cincinnati, Ohio,” he added.
Jelly Roll is also nominated for five CMA Awards, including for Male Vocalist of the Year and Single of the Year, for his second consecutive No. 1 hit with “Need A Favor.”
“It is known as Country Music’s biggest night,” Jelly Roll said when the nominations were announced. “It literally doesn’t get any bigger than this and I have five nominations. I couldn’t control myself when I got the news… everything about this is unreal. The truth is, being nominated is already a win for me. Just being recognized by my peers and by the industry for the work we put in is amazing, especially for my people, this is a win for all the underdogs and forgotten.
“These are the moments I hope my people are the most proud of, that I have taken our message to the masses without compromise and have been embraced,” he continued. “Thank you to the CMA Country Music Association. This is magical and you can bet the farm that my wife and I will show up dressed to impress yet trashy as ever – see y’all November 8th.”
