Jelly Roll is more than 100 pounds lighter, after committing to getting healthier and losing weight. The Nashville native reveals the biggest battle was in his mind, a battle he is now successfully conquering.
“The battle was with the food addiction, changing the way I’ve looked at food for the last 39 years,” Jelly Roll tells People. “I’ve never had a healthy relationship with food, so that was the hard part. But once you get into that discipline and commitment, it’s like an avalanche. Once that little snowball started rolling, it was on its way.”
Jelly Roll’s childhood was far from easy, which contributed to his struggle with food and other issues. It’s been something he has struggled with most of his life, until now.
“Nobody in my house ever had [a healthy relationship with food], so that was the hard part, really fighting that demon at first and getting into that discipline and that commitment,” Jelly Roll reflects.
The “Liar” singer just wrapped up his Beautifully Broken Tour, where he continued his commitment to getting healthier, both with bringing a nutritionist on tour, and playing daily games of basketball with those on the road with him.
“It’s cool because there was once a time in life that the culture I built on tour was the opposite,” Jelly Roll says. “It revolved around alcohol and drugs. And now our tour culture is around good eating and around exercising and doing emotional check-ins with our crew every day.”
Jelly Roll’s commitment to getting healthy extends beyond losing weight. He recently revealed he was taking an indefinite break from social media, to work on his mental health.
“For those of y’all that know me on this app, or have listened to me or my wife, y’all know I have a very unhealthy relationship with social media,” Jelly Roll shared. “I have a very unhealthy relationship with phones. So, I’m getting on here to tell y’all I’m taking a break. It’s been a crazy couple of years, and I love y’all so much. I’m throwing this phone out the window tonight. I’m gonna go phoneless for a few months. My friends from where I’m from are used to this. I’ve been doing this since I was a kid.
“But I love y’all, man,” he concluded. “I’m sure that I’ll still be posting. I’ll grab me a GoPro or something, and I’m sure you’ll see me on my wife’s stuff, but I love y’all, man. Thank y’all for making this the most incredible year I could’ve ever asked for.”
Earlier this year, Jelly Roll said he planned on focusing even more on his health in 2025.
“Next year when you all see me, you won’t recognize me,” he vowed. “I’m going to get under a pile of weights in a way that I never have.”
Jelly Roll just released both his Beautifully Broken and Beautifully Broken (Pickin’ Up the Pieces) albums. He is reportedly also working on opening his own Nashville bar. Find all of his music and updates at JellyRoll615.com.
