Jelly Roll is in a commercial for Zevia, a popular, zero-calorie soda. The singer has been vocal about his desire to add acting to his resume. but especially had fun with the humorous angle for his new commercial.
“What I loved about this is it felt like we got to really play into the skit and have some fun with it,” Jelly Roll tells Billboard. “When I got to do the season premiere of SNL this year, I got to also be a part of a skit, and this was another version of being able to really lean into having fun with a character. And everyone else on set was so game too which made it such a great experience.”
Fortunately, Jelly Roll doesn’t mind other people having fun at his own expense.
“One thing you can say about me is that I am me — even when I get chances to play up a character — and I hope that comes through in this spot. What you see is what you get.”
It’s fitting that Jelly Roll is part of a commercial for a healthy drink choice, since he’s been intentional about his own health recently, shedding well over 100 pounds.
“Making small, intentional choices daily is a real thing that I have honed in on and that has been so impactful during this process,” Jelly Roll explains. “I think it’s changed my ability to keep up with my progress, since it has been an honest conversation of ‘in that moment’ which one is the better option to stay on track?”
The biggest battle for Jelly Roll and his weight loss has been in his mind, overcoming habits and addictions he held for years.
“The battle was with the food addiction, changing the way I’ve looked at food for the last 39 years,” Jelly Roll tells People. “I’ve never had a healthy relationship with food, so that was the hard part. But once you get into that discipline and commitment, it’s like an avalanche. Once that little snowball started rolling, it was on its way.”
“Nobody in my house ever had [a healthy relationship with food], so that was the hard part, really fighting that demon at first and getting into that discipline and that commitment,” he adds.
Jelly Roll will make his acting debut on a TV show this year. The Nashville native is appearing on an episode of CBS’ Fire Country. It’s a dream come true for Jelly Roll, who has for years wanted to be on a TV show or in a film.
“I want to act, really bad,” Jelly Roll previously told Audacy. “I know it sounds weird. I never thought I would act, but I’ve been really inspired by what Machine Gun Kelly has done with his career the last three years. I’m one of the old-school guys, and this is weird, but if I see somebody do something, whatever in me, since I was a kid, instantly goes, ‘Oh, that’s doable.’”
