Jeremy Camp on Releasing ‘I Still Believe’ Film Amid COVID-19: ‘It Was Bittersweet’

It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for Jeremy Camp amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Christian singer released his biographical film, I Still Believe, right as the country was beginning to shut down due to coronavirus. The movie still became the No. 1 movie in the nation, but Jeremy’s elation was mixed with the unsettling awareness that life for him, and everyone else, was about to change.

“I think that it was bittersweet, because I think that I kind of knew,” Jeremy reflected to CCM magazine. “I mean, for one, it was shocking that we were No. 1 on Friday. It was kind of that day going, ‘Oh. This is insane.’ But I think it was the up and down emotion, going, ‘What’s going to happen? and this excitement, but [knowing] everything’s gonna be shut down, so everything’s going to be short-lived.”

I Still Believe is also the title of one of Jeremy’s earliest singles, written shortly after his first wife, Melissa, passed away from ovarian cancer only a few months after they were married. It’s a theme that has remained throughout his life and career, even though it was tested when movie theaters were forced to close while I Still Believe was still at the top at the box office.

“I think for me, it was one of those things where, after the weekend hit, I went through a definite fog of, what just happened?” Jeremy admitted.  “You have two years of blood, sweat and tears, doing this movie, and everything was going really, really well. It was exciting, and they declared a global pandemic. The two things that would have probably stopped a movie from going would be a world war probably and a global pandemic.”

Jeremy admits he had moments of frustration, and even tears, before he returned to the one truth he has always clung to, even in times of uncertainty.

“It definitely was a reshift of just going, ‘OK, Lord. I have to really, really believe,'” Jeremy said. “Because if we believe in his sovereignty, which we do, I have to really, really trust that in His sovereignty, He is in control, and He has a plan for this. It was an adjustment for me, for sure. I think the great thing about it, in the midst of the up and down emotions –– I had one day where I just kind of lost it. I wept, to be honest.”
