Jimmy Buffett Shares the True Story Behind His Biggest Hit, ‘Margaritaville’

We now know the true story behind Jimmy Buffett’s biggest hit, “Margaritaville!” Jimmy shared the story while chatting on the Bobby Bones Show.

“It happened in Austin,” Jimmy recalled. “I was staying at a club at that time called the Castle Creek … I had done a show the night before, and I was a little bit hungover, so we went and had some burritos and a margarita. It was hot and I said, ‘Man, that was a good margarita,’ and I started it there, like ‘Wastin’ away da da da,’ and then got on a plane from Austin.

“Went back to Miami, was driving down to the Keys going home, and there was a wreck on the Seven Mile Bridge,” he continued. “In the stopped traffic, I wrote the end of it on the Seven Mile Bridge, and then got to Key West and finished it, and did it on stage in the bar I was working in the next night. People seemed to like it.”

Jimmy waited seven years to release new music, with his Life on the Flip Side, which came out last month, marking his first new music since Songs From St. Somewhere was released in 2013. While fans waited a long time for new music, Jimmy was busy immersing himself in another aspect of the music world: Broadway.

“Other things were happening during that time,” Jimmy said. “We were on a writing streak, because we were kind of invested in going in the direction of Broadway, to do the musical Margaritaville, which took about five years to get up, done, ramped up and on stage. And so, that wound up being more work than I thought about, and at the time, that was happening.

“Then when Playlist and music service things were coming, I didn’t know whether albums would still be around, to be honest,” he added. “I thought maybe we’ll do a couple of songs, because we’ve got the studio … As a performer, [if] you do an album, you could never put 12 new songs into the show list and try to play them. You always had to find out a, what everyone was playing on the radio or b, what fans were telling you.”

The 73-year-old will make his debut on the Grand Ole Opry on June 27, where he will be joined by Mac MacAnally, who produced Life on the Flip Side, and Brad Paisley. Find details on the show at Opry.com.
