An entirely new album is coming from Justin Moore later this year. The Arkansas native just announced the release of his Stray Dog album, out on May 5. The eight-track project, which includes both his “You, Me, and Whiskey” duet with Priscilla Block, as well as a collaboration with Riley Green on “Everybody Get Along,” will be out on May 5.
“A long time ago I decided I wasn’t going to play games or pursue things that didn’t make me happy,” Moore says of the project. “Perhaps that’s made me a bit of an outsider in this industry, but it’s also what allows me to go to bed each night feeling good about what I’m doing.”
Moore just dropped “Stray Dogs” from the record, which he wrote with Paul DiGiovanni, Randy Montana and Jeremy Stover.
“It’s a really personal, autobiographical song,” Moore shares. “I’ve never just gone along with the crowd. I’ve always tried to follow my heart and let the chips fall where they may, and I’m really proud of that.”
Moore previously said that he was grateful that he has been able to make the music that he wanted to make, even if it didn’t necessarily sound like what the current trends are in country music.
“I’ve been very fortunate that my team around me has been really, really great,” Moore told Everything Nash last summer.. “And my label, to be honest with you — you hear horror stories from other artists about what they’re dealing with at their record label. And I’ve been with the same record label my entire career. The fact that they’ve continued to work their butts off for me … Especially when I came out, the radio sounded like one thing. And then in the middle of my career, it completely shifted and did something completely opposite of what it started as. We kind of bent a little with our music, but we never really jumped off that edge and said, ‘Hey, we’re gonna chase this because this is working.’
“And the fact that country radio stuck with me during that particular time is a huge reason why I’m still doing it,” he adds. “Now it’s kind of shifted back to more of what we do as far as the sound of music on the radio. But it says a lot about the relationships that we’ve been able to make.”
Stray Dog also includes his romantic tune, “With A Woman You Love,” written about his wife, Kate, whom he wed in 2007..
“If you have ‘If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away,’ or ‘The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,’ and you’re putting that out, you have this grandiose idea of it, and way to sell it,” Moore explained to Everything Nash. “This is just a prototypical love song. It certainly isn’t breaking the mold. But we’ve had, I don’t know, 20 hit records total, let’s just say, for easy math, and four or five of them have been love songs. So we haven’t done a ton of them, is my point. But they all always do really, really well for us. They’re always big hits on the radio and they always stream well, and do all those things. We just kind of forget about that part of our music; there’s one or two on every album, but I rarely put them out as singles.”
